  I thought tippingwas optionalin drive throug. Apparently, when i didn't, i received over salted fries, overcooked burger patties, and latest trip undercooked hotdogs. All different occasions.

  Great stop. Nice casual spot with good food burgers, chicken fingers and hotdogs. The deserts are really good too, specially the chocolate cake. Service is fast and friendly. A bit pricier than a fast food chain, but worth the extra dollar or so.

  When I hear the name Portillo's, I'm immediately awash with warm, fuzzy feelings from my many trips to see family in Chicago. This Windy City-based chain offers what I genuinely consider America's third-largest city's top culinary exports: the Italian beef and the red hot. I can't count how many times I've set foot in Portillo's, but I can recall always leaving the eatery stuffed beyond belief with a smile on my face. ​So when the news broke that the Houston area would be home to at least two branches, my excitement went through the roof. Now, I can get my beef fix without having to catch a flight to Chi-Town, even if I have to travel more than 60 miles. As of the publication of this glowing review about the Katy location, there are five in Space City. ​Portillo's Katy has been open for about a year, but my birthday back in August was my first time there. I didn't need to browse the menu over the counter because I already knew what I wanted: a Big Beef done hot, sweet, and wet with fries. I even added a red hot dragged through the garden to the mix, just as I used to do at the Portillo's locations up north. It felt like welcoming back an old friend when I carried the tray with my orders to one of the booths I chose. ​I must say that despite being a Texas outpost, Portillo's Katy succeeded at making both the beef and the red hot as similar to their original counterparts in the Windy City. Knowing it may be a while before another visit, I slowly savored every bite. It felt like a dream come true. Just like its sister stores about a thousand miles away, this Portillo's earned lots of positive marks from me, from the food to the customer service and even the facilities. ​While Portillo's may seem like a novel concept here in Southeast Texas, I have high hopes that it will succeed in this part of the country.

  Way over rated. Had to go to wash hands and rinse mouth to get rid of aftertaste. Chili was horrible. No salt on the beef .bratwurst was really good fries over salted. I have eaten Italian beef sandwiches from Pittsburgh to New York and these do not compare at all.

  I have been a loyal customer of this Portillo’s location since it opened and have visited 32 times. Up until my most recent experience, the service and operations here have consistently been excellent, which is why this visit stood out so much. On March 5, 2026, around noon, the restaurant appeared to be significantly understaffed during what is clearly a busy lunch period. While there are kiosks available to place orders, many customers—especially older patrons—still prefer to order with a cashier. Unfortunately, only one register was open, and the line stretched halfway through the entrance of the restaurant. In addition to the long line just to place an order, it appeared that the kitchen line was also short on staff, resulting in very long wait times for food. While I will say the food did come out hot and fresh, the overall delay created a frustrating experience for many customers waiting. A major issue during this visit was that both soda beverage machines were not functioning, which affected what appeared to be the majority of customers in the restaurant. While waiting for food, I overheard several guests suggesting that management should have opened a refund or assistance line for customers impacted by the beverage situation. What concerned me most was the lack of visible management response to these issues. When beverage machines are down and staffing appears inadequate during a busy lunch rush, there should be clear communication and proactive solutions for customers. This has not been typical of this location, which is why I am bringing it to your attention. However, if this had been my first visit, I would likely have been hesitant to return. First impressions—and even repeat impressions—carry significant weight in the restaurant industry. Because I have had many positive experiences here in the past, I hope corporate leadership will review what happened on this day and ensure this location has adequate staffing, functioning equipment, and management oversight during peak hours. Portillo’s has built a strong reputation, and it would be unfortunate for operational issues like this to impact the customer experience.
