recently visited Mikki’s Soul Food in Houston and ordered the turkey wings with macaroni and mashed potatoes for me and my wife. The sides were decent, but the turkey wings were extremely tough and hard to enjoy. I’m not trying to tear down anyone’s business, but the quality just wasn’t there this time. I hope they can improve because the place has potential, but based on this visit, I wouldn’t recommend the turkey wings.

I pulled up to get me some food for work last night and seen a rat. Turned right back around and left. Hell to the nawwww. Never coming back! If they are outside your building, they are inside too. Watch the owner come with her smart ass comments cause she hates when people post about her restaurant. You can't make anything better or make me ever wanna come back. I'm good. I've had an issue before with the way 1 of her workers there treated an elderly veteran, and didn't appreciate how nothing was done about it, but this is a different complaint. Just disgusted.

I had been here several times in the past. My visit yesterday was a first in a while and visiting from Cypress we were very disappointed. The food does not taste the same. The greens and oxtails were extra salty. The pinto beans, string beans and potatoes, spaghetti and Alfredo and fish had no taste at all. The strawberry cake "was nasty," my husband words, not mine. I did like the peach cobler and the sweet Potato pie was ok. The kool-aid was not the same. Good old school kool-aid is sweet. The grape kool-aid had that tart taste, just not sweet enough. The service from 3 out of the 4 servers were dry, unfriendly. When I approached the end of the line before heading to the register my husband was there ahead of me and the gentleman handed him one of the bags with the slip on it of our selections, as I stood close next to my husband eyeing are large purchase insuring we were receiving everything. The gentleman behind the counter took one look at me and quickly snatched the slip off the bag and walked it to the cashier. My husband is of non-color and I am every bit of African American. It is one thing to be judged outside your race. It is bad to be judged by your own kind. Of course we were able to pay our $142 bill with no problem. Customer service goes a long way the $2 tip could have easily been a $20 tip. It is safe to say with our overall experience we will not be returning.

After 3+ years in Houston searching for soul food that reminds me of Atlanta, I finally found a solid spot at Mikki's Soul Food Cafe.
I’ve been twice and ordered the meatloaf dinner both times. The meatloaf is well-seasoned, tender, and covered in a rich gravy that pairs perfectly with the fluffy rice. Portions are BIG, so while prices ($19.95–$23.95) seem a little high at first, it’s definitely worth it.
First visit was excellent—especially the green beans (flavorful with bacon and onions). Second visit, the green beans had too many potatoes and not enough beans, and the mac and cheese was just too heavy for my taste.
My main issue is the to-go packaging. The gravy is very liquidy and spilled into the bag during transport, making the container messy by the time I got back to work. A separate sealed container for the gravy would fix this easily.
Overall, this is one of the best soul food spots I’ve found in Houston. I’ll definitely be back—and I’m bringing my mom next time.
