About

RestaurantFine Dining Restaurant
Zaranda reimagines the cuisine of Las Californias—the historic region once stretching from present-day Northern California to Cabo San Lucas—brought to life in downtown Houston by award-winning Chefs Hugo and Ruben Ortega. The restaurant asks a simple question: What if Alta and Baja California had never been divided? The answer is a cuisine sin fronteras—food without borders—rich in history, culture, and abundance. The name Zaranda comes from the traditional wire basket used for zarandeado, a centuries-old technique of grilling fish over an open flame, still beloved across Baja. Fittingly, seafood takes center stage on the menu, from lobster and octopus to clams and sea urchin.

Significant Safety Concern & Disappointing Service I generally prefer to highlight the positives, but after reflecting on our recent experience, I feel it’s important to share our feedback for the sake of future diners with allergies. The Main Concern: Health & Safety When making our reservation, we specifically flagged a gluten allergy. Despite this, the server never confirmed allergies at the table. Toward the end of the meal, I began experiencing physical symptoms (numbness) and asked the server to double-check the dish. He confirmed it was not gluten-free. While he apologized for the mistake, no manager ever came to the table to address the incident. For an upscale establishment, a breakdown in allergy communication of this magnitude is deeply concerning. Service & Atmosphere The service felt noticeably inconsistent. While we watched neighboring tables receive constant water refills and complimentary appetizers from the chef, our water glasses sat empty multiple times. We couldn't help but feel overlooked, which was disappointing given the price point and the restaurant's reputation. we also couldn't help but wonder, were we not getting great service because we were not in a suit and formal attire. Logistics To top off the evening, the valet informed us upon departure that we needed our dinner receipt for validation and the ticket stub the aiter provided us to comp the valet would not work. Since it was pouring rain and we were already feeling unwell and discouraged, we opted to pay for parking rather than head back inside. Final Verdict We expected a high level of attentiveness and professional standard of care, but unfortunately, the evening fell short on both counts. If you have a severe allergy, please be extremely cautious here.

I was with a private party. Service was excellent, cocktails were great. The food was average, half chicken had good flavor but a bit dry. Apatisers where fresh and flavorful. Deserts were good. I'd try again ina smaller group with full menu options.

Excellent food, ambience and service. Perfect to impress your Valentine's date. Went because my wife was interested in the Valentine's menu. Unfortunately, the website did not specify the time of the day at which this menu was available. So, Victor, the Manager, made it up to us for this little mishap in their website, so offered us the "Salteado Brancino" (off menu item at the time) and invited us a glass of wine for both us. Outstanding. And Daniel, our waiter, was on top of his game. May be a bit expensive but this is what you pay for an awesome experience. Highly recommended!!!!

Zaranda has a really nice atmosphere and service. Food and drinks came out fairly quickly and everyone was very friendly. Food was decent. We had the aguachile negro, tuna taquitos, tiradito tostada, taco de res, taco estilo baja, and ostiones. My favorite were the oysters. Taco estilo baja and aguachile negro were decent; note: aguachile negro was not spicy. The rest of the dishes lacked flavor. Having been to Baja a few times, the influence is there and it leans authentic, but the flavors felt muted. I did like that the dishes were small to share and try a wide a wide range of things. I liked that the dishes were smaller (at least on the happy hour menu), making it easy to share and try a wide range of items.
