Last Saturday, I booked a reservation for a party of 13 to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday. We chose Fleming’s because we hadn’t visited in a while and wanted to patronize what has long been considered a Houston favorite. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing.
We were informed during booking that birthday accommodations and table decorations would be provided, but the evening quickly became disorganized once service began. Two servers were taking orders for our large party, which created significant confusion. Guests seated on one side of the table either received incorrect meals or never received their food at all.
Several orders had to be converted to to-go meals because the restaurant was closing before food arrived. Even then, the to-go orders were incorrect, placed in the wrong bags, and included charges that should not have been on the checks.
The birthday dessert experience was also underwhelming. My boyfriend was served a crème brûlée that was cold and had the texture and taste of packaged pudding rather than a freshly prepared dessert.
As a professional chef and culinary arts instructor, I understand the challenges of large-party service, but there appeared to be little urgency to correct ongoing issues even after management was made aware. Half of our party left without properly eating, which is unacceptable for a planned birthday celebration.
For perspective, my personal ticket for just two guests exceeded $325 before gratuity, and many others in our party also spent significantly. At that price point, guests reasonably expect coordinated service, accurate orders, and properly executed food. Unfortunately, that level of quality was not delivered.
My own steak was not cooked to the requested medium temperature, but given the extended delays affecting the table, I chose not to send it back. By the end of the evening, we felt rushed out rather than celebrated.
I do want to acknowledge that one of our servers was excellent and professional throughout the night. However, overall service coordination, food execution, and management response fell far below expectations.
We specifically chose Fleming’s over other restaurants for this celebration, and it was disappointing to leave with guests still hungry and a birthday experience that felt chaotic rather than special.
Food was absolutely delectable.
Paarsa and Isaac were so helpful and immediately assisted us with any of our needs!
Will for sure be returning soon.
We were highly anticipating trying this restaurant. However, we will never eat at this location again! Our friend's birthday dinner was at the River Oaks location, an 11-person guest party. The atmosphere & table setting were both great. The hostess who showed us to our table was pleasant & welcoming. When time to order is when I noticed a shift in a particular staff member, & my comfort level changed drastically. We were given 2 waiters, Dominique & Christian. Dominique was very friendly, knowledgeable & extremely accommodating. Although there were many of us, he still tried his very best to accommodate us all before the 2nd waiter stepped in. The 2nd waiter had a more "I'm just here to do my job" attitude. He gave below-standard customer service, actually. Dominique took all of our drinks & starter orders & 7 of the 11 dinner orders for our table. Christian then took the remaining 4. Mine, my husband's & another couple sitting directly next to us orders.
I ordered a blueberry lemon drop martini, a glass of moscato for my husband, 2 Shirley temples with light ice & the blue cheese wedge salad as a starter for my husband & me to share, with Dominique. Christian took our dinner order. I ordered the main filet mignon w/the truffle-poached lobster & caviar on the side. My husband, the Japanese A5 wagyu steak, & 2 shareable sides: the Chipotle cheddar mac & cheese & the sweet corn brûlée. Waited 30+ mins for the food to start coming out, only to realize that 3 of the 4 orders Christian took were never even prepared or brought out to us. We never got to eat with the rest of our dinner party that night. My husband got his steak but didn't get any sides. A manager was helping the servers serve the food. When I asked her where our food was, she looked very confused. She then said to give her a min to check with the kitchen only to return to tell us that our dinner orders were never even printed to make!! She apologized & then said they would get them out to us quickly & comp those 3 meals & that we would only pay for our drinks.
Took another 35 mins to arrive, now everyone else at our table was finished eating. We had to ask for ours to go as the restaurant was closing in 15 mins. I received steak with no caviar & NO SIDES whatsoever for my husband & me. I had to get up & find someone to request another hot skillet to finish cooking the remainder of my husband's Wagyu. It had completely cooled off before he could even make half of it. When I asked about our sides, everyone was perplexed Took another 20 mins to make those. We all had celebratory champagne & the birthday person had their dessert by the time the sides came. Then the WRONG sides were given. I ordered mac & cheese & brûlée corn, not mashed potatoes which we were given. Not once did the waiter ever come to apologize to any of us for his egregious mistakes or acknowledge them; his manager & other colleagues had to do that.
Final straw was the bill. We were aware that a 18% gratuity would be added to the bill for each dinner party's receipt. Why was our gratuity on our final bill almost 60%, not 18%??? They took off the dinners but STILL charged us for the gratuity on the meals they took off! Just despicable & disgraceful, this location was quite the letdown. When the manager came, it just seemed condescending & the typical “I'm sorry” response. She even dared to say she hopes we give them another opportunity to serve us again. How about you take the current opportunity & make it right. Free food was not what we came for; the experience was, & that was ruined. Never got the correct sides. Picking up the ball would have been, we know we significantly let you down, especially for a first-time impression. "How about you allow us to serve you & your husband again on us!" That would have been more believable & shown care about making up for our experience. We will go to the Memorial location if we do go again. Gratutiy+tip should not be split down the middle with an undeserving waiter. Highly disappointing & do not recommend this location for the above reasons.
We came on Wednesday and had a reservation for 6. We came half an hour early and the host Kemani was very helpful in getting us seated at the bar and at a booth. Both Christians were absolutely fantastic and took the time to explain the menu and drinks to us. Overall a very good first impression and I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family
We had been looking forward to trying Fleming’s for quite some time and finally decided to give it a visit. We ordered a filet, dry aged ribeye, loaded mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and drinks. Both steaks were cooked to a perfect medium; however, they lacked flavor. Before we even tasted the steaks, our server asked if we would like A1 sauce, salt, or pepper. We declined, as at a restaurant with this price point, seasoning shouldn’t be necessary. After tasting the steaks, though, it became clear why the offer was made.
The restaurant was surprisingly quiet for a Friday night, with only about eight tables occupied, yet the service was extremely slow. Our server apologized multiple times, which we appreciated, but the delays were still noticeable, especially given that the restaurant did not appear to be understaffed. The sides were enjoyable, and we had no complaints there.
On our way out, I stopped to use the restroom and noticed the toilet paper was nearly gone, fortunately, there was just enough. The restroom itself was also not very clean and had an unpleasant odor.
Overall, I wouldn’t place this restaurant in the same category as other high-end steakhouse chains like Mastro’s, Ruth’s Chris, or Perry’s. I don’t enjoy leaving negative reviews, but the overall level of disappointment and dissatisfaction made this experience hard to overlook.
