Houston’s Erewhon, but a bajillion times better.
If you go on Eventbrite and look up Central Market’s profile, you’ll find a full, rotating schedule of cooking classes. I want to be very clear about what these are and what they are not. These classes are extremely beginner-friendly. You’re not measuring ingredients, nothing feels stressful, and much of the prep is already done. You’re essentially assembling dishes, learning techniques, and enjoying the process without pressure.
The menus themselves are excellent, and you can choose the theme that speaks to you. I picked New Orleans Steakhouse Night, and it was fantastic. These classes make an incredible date night. They’re creative, fun, and social. Some classes are also geared toward kids, which I think is a great touch.
One thing to know going in is the seating. Tables are typically set for four people, and if you’re a party of one or two, you’ll be paired with others to complete the dishes, which are portioned accordingly. My only hesitation came from timing. My friend and I happened to be seated with someone whose energy was deeply uncomfortable and frankly racist. I won’t give that much airtime, but it did affect the vibe. That said, I’m absolutely willing to try another class, because I don’t think that experience reflects the program as a whole.
Outside of the classes, this store is exceptional.
The prepared foods section is outstanding. The bulk foods section is a treasure trove, and you must get the roasted garlic powder. That alone could change your cooking. The produce is some of the freshest you’ll find in the city. Beautiful, well cared for, often displayed on ice.
The sandwich shop deserves its own moment. My favorite sandwich ever was created by Monica and is called the Sweet and Spicy. It used to be on the menu, but there’s very much a quiet, unofficial “secret menu” situation. If you ask for it and hear what’s on it, you’ll understand immediately. It’s phenomenal.
Yes, Central Market is pricier, and I’m empathetic to anyone shopping on a tight budget. That said, if it’s within reach, even prioritizing produce here is worth it. You don’t have to go wild across every aisle to appreciate the quality.
Overall, Central Market is one of Houston’s crown jewels. Thoughtful, elevated, and genuinely fun to experience. Ten out of ten, easily.

I mainly come here to buy flowers and by far the service is amazing. Joe makes the best bouquets. absolutely gorgeous. He is very artistic and always finds the best arrangement and color combinations. Ive been to multiple central markets and other flower shops across, and by far this location is the best. Joe is absolutely incredible at making bouquets, I’ve not had anybody else better than him.

I have been enjoying the store and many of its staff for the last 20 years.I especially counted on their chefs every Thanksgiving, and Christmas to order extra turkey, jalapeño dressing, and gravy to have on hand. The items always tasted fabulous……like my grandmother made them. But this Thanksgiving & Christmas, they were awful. So sad to see a favorite Holiday experience disappear.

Very clean and organized place. Came here since I was in area and heard of their dollar rose days, was not disappointed. They had a lovely assortment of rose colors to choose from and all were fresh and look great.
The store is kind of structured like a maze and has a few “shortcuts” to be able to move more quickly through the store, but overall very structured.
They have an in house cafe/cafeteria/bakery set up as well, and everything looked fresh and the bakery section smelled amazing. Tried their “cozy cup latte” and their “pumpkin patch chai” from their cafe. Baristas were sweet and helped pick out the drinks, service was quick, and drinks tasted great and were made with high quality.
Overall, was really pleased with the quality of products offered here, the customer service is superior, and workers are very helpful and sweet. Great first experience, will definitely be visiting more often.
