Best grocery store in the history of grocery stores. I travel the country often and still haven't found one that comes close

H-E-B is quite literally the best shopping experience you will ever have. If I could become sponsored by H-E-B to promote their products, it wouldn’t really be acting because I genuinely believe in everything they sell

Today I made my usual pilgrimage to H-E-B—because apparently I live there 3–4 times a week. As always, I headed straight for self-checkout. I’m fast, I’m efficient, and honestly, I do it as a public service for the folks who refuse to scan their own bananas. I had 22 items—yes, twenty-two. Mostly tiny things: a box of cornbread mix, a few chili seasoning packets, seven cans of whatever, and three jalapeños. (Yes, the jalapeños count. Don’t argue with me.) There was no line. Three open machines in which I chose one, So naturally, I get to scanning. Enter: Grocery Store Security Guard Wannabe. This H-E-B employee marches up to me and announces, “You need to leave. This is for 10 items or less.” I just stared at her like she had spontaneously started speaking Chinese and I said, “I’m not leaving.” She repeats herself three more times like she’s stuck on a broken Walmart intercom, and I repeat myself right back: I’m. Not. Moving. So after I finish checking out—because I am, in fact, a grown adult capable of scanning 22 small items without causing a statewide emergency—I ask for a manager. That’s when it really went off the rails. This “manager,” James, shows up. I start telling him what happened, and before I even get through my sentence he cuts me off with, “The sign says 10 items.” Then he hits me with this gem: “Would you drive 85 miles per hour in a 60 zone?” Sir. Please. We’re talking about scanning groceries, not committing felonies on I-35. Your job as a manager is to calm the situation—not go full DPS trooper in the self-checkout lane. Then he ends our conversation by telling me to “have a great day” about five times, which is corporate-speak for “please leave before I short-circuit.” So I asked for the general managers name and number and I proceed to call him, immediately Kenny Scott—a reasonable human being. Great guy. He actually listened and promised he’d address it. I hope he does, because I am absolutely not the first person these two have treated like they were smuggling illegal produce through the scanner. The entire reason I’m writing this is simple: if you shop at this store and you get treated the same way, tell the GM. It’s groceries people. It’s Christmas. Get a grip, pick your battles and maybe try going after all the thieves you have that pass through your gates, and maybe—just maybe—don’t treat customers like they’re committing major crimes over cornbread mix. I debated writing this, but after talking to others, it clearly needs to be said. If it happens to you, speak up. The GM will actually listen. Merry Christmas to all. This was just so unnecessary
