  A great surprise! We were looking for a butcher shop with quality meats and good customer service, and we’re really happy we found this place. I had the entrecôte, which was absolutely delicious. There’s a great selection, plus homemade mashed potatoes and handmade meat dishes. Definitely worth a visit!

  We get our pork shoulder there, among other things, and it has always been delicious. Plus, I absentmindedly almost walked out of the store without paying once and no one tackled me or called the police! ;)

  With so many locally sourced competitors in Charleston, not to mentioned online organic retailers like ButcherBox.com or Riverbend Ranch, you'd think they'd keep their customer service, at minimum, professional. I inquired about getting a turkey and ham for Thanksgiving...3 weeks ahead of Thanksgiving. The woman on the phone scoffed and basically told me I was stupid for not ordering before Halloween...before she hung up on me. If a local butcher can't maintain professional customer service, then they probably aren't maintaining a professional kitchen either. Know your clientele- while your name may be New York Butcher, most of us appreciate a little southern charm.

  Good products, but disorganized and some staff members need retraining. Two women, one working at the counter and the other making food, both need further education in food and customer service. The posted allergy list is incomplete and there are no ingredients on the package labels. When I asked if a premade item not on the list was gluten free, they both said, "Yes." The problem was that they insisted gluten came from cheese and since there was no cheese in it, the item was gluten free. Around and around we went with me trying to explain what gluten is , where it can hide, and that natural cheese does not contain gluten. It has, in this case, nothing to do with gluten. They both said people are always asking if there is dairy in items, so they assumed that was what 'gluten free' meant. I was disturbed knowing they had no idea about what they prepared and sold and I explained the importance of being educated on what you sell. I left the store frustrated that neither really "got it." I can't purchase prepared foods there, because I don't trust them. I was even more discouraged on a different visit when I told the man at the counter that I had previously ordered pot roast from a different NY Butcher nearby. I asked if the Oakland store pot roast had gluten in it, the man said, "Yes. We use the same recipe as that store." What? The other store said gluten free and this one says same recipe but not gluten free. The ingredient list is very important. Some people's lives rely on that info. You never know how important it is until your own health depends on it. Believe me, it is no joke and it is not fun. Please educate your staff, put accurate ingredients lists on the labels, and take pride in what you are doing enough to *know* what you are doing. Accurate labeling and Train. The. Staff.
