Burgers are life, so I'm always excited to try a burger spot, and I always try to get close to a classic old-school burger for my first try, to establish a clear baseline. So, I ordered a regular burger on a classic sesame seed bun, pickles-lettuce-tomato-onion, mustard-ketchup-mayo. Based on how that goes, if I love it and come back, I'll try a place's more specialized burgers.
The cook did everything right, here. The meat was cooked exactly how I asked, and it was sizeable and nicely done. The veggies were on point, with the pickles being the main surprise (chunky, creating fun little pickle moments). The condiments were a nice mix and not too much (some cooks, seeing three condiments, will drown a burger -- this cook knew better!)
So this would have been a really good burger, even an exceptional burger, except for the bun, which was just the blandest, least-inspiring, commercial-bakery copy-paste bun I've had to deal with in a long time, and on top of that it was a bit stale, and on top of that it was a LOT of bun, so much so that this stale, bland bun became the dominant experience. The yummy meat and excellent veggies had to struggle for attention; every bite was under-fresh, inspiration-free, bun. Bun for days.
So that ended up being a solid, but somewhat sad, 3-star burger, and it could easily jump a half-star or even a whole star, with a more amazing take on the classic sesame-seed-bun from a baker that knows how. I felt bad for the cook, who was clearly top-of-game, and then that bun just ... ugh. Tragedy.
I feel like this is even sadder here in NEPA, where we LOVE bread and tend to approach it with respect ... not whatever sad packing-material roll that was.
Service was SUPER friendly and welcoming. The dining room was pretty cool but it was also ICE COLD. Apparently the heating system is currently broken, and we came in on a bitey winter's day. The staff wore coats. We left our gloves on until the burgers arrived.
We'll be back, because the meat was good and the veggies were great. With less neglect for the bun (especially when a big burger needs big bread) this could be an excellent burger.
