TLDR: An employee was way out of line with how she spoke to her colleague, and she was in violation of the law. I will not support it. Her name was Chelsea. She had long, red hair pulled back in a ponytail and was focused on a little kid with blonde hair. She was removing the "express" sign from the check-out line the first time I saw her. I frequent Safeway in any city I'm in. It's my go-to for several niche items and brands. I was visiting in Reedsport over the weekend (Sun, 9/14/25) and used this Safeway for microwavable breakfast items for my child. My cashier was very nice and conversational. I asked about his job and he had positive things to say. He mentioned he was feeling ready for a break, and, knowing what retail and grocery jobs are like, I empathized. This Safeway looked short staffed and I worried they weren't treating their workers fairly because of it. I always worry about that when I can tell a business is not running at optimal performance. This cashier was kind, and he said to his nearby colleague in a jovial manner, "are you gonna cover me so I can take my break?" and his colleague responded, "Excuse me?" This is already an inappropriate response to anyone in this context, but especially when on the job. The cashier repeated himself in the same jovial manner, complete with a friendly smile, and the colleague replied, "That's not how we ask." and went back to what she was doing. It was very clear she had absolutely no regard for his rights or needs as a human being. When she was removing the "express" check-out sign, she'd mentioned to a third party that it wasn't her first time doing it and she'd gotten permission from "the boss." So I'm not sure what her position is, perhaps Team Lead or something of that nature, but people in positions of any authority have a duty to advocate for their colleagues and employees and to treat them with respect on the job. She showed absolutely zero integrity or accountability. I was in shock that she would treat someone like that at work, and even more so in front of patrons at the front of the store. Whoever is allowing this should be fired. Chelsea should be demoted. You aren't better than any other person just because you maybe get a higher salary or might have benefits due to working full time; You still exist within that establishment to make Cerberus Capital Management and their stock holders rich like everyone else working in Safeay. How dare you treat those around you as if they should kiss the ground you walk on. I'm glad my child wasn't present for this shopping trip because this is not the example we should be setting for how to treat other people in the world nor what the relationship between employees and their supervisors should look like--IF she was even a supervisor of any kind. Keep in mind it's illegal to deny an employee their break; regular breaks are a legal right in Oregon, and it is illegal for employers to require an employee to work through their rest break AND it's illegal to delay a rest break excessively; this cashier was already over an hour due for his break by the time I arrived in his line. He is within reason and within his rights to request a break.* If management doesn't want store patrons getting involved in their politics, perhaps their employees with inflated egos should go through hospitality/sensitivity training. This was unacceptable. *In fact, this location should be grateful they have such an employee as obedient as this man was. I would have closed my lane, regardless of which lane it was, and took the break I am entitled to by law. 1. It's no problem for an employee to ask for their break. Patrons like seeing employees being treated properly. 2. He wouldn't have had to ask if his leads had his best interest in mind. 3. A business will not remain successful if the people responsible for making it successful are miserable from mistreatment. 0/10 would not visit again. I get angry every time "that's not how we ask" repeats in my mind. I will take my money to McKay's a block up the road. Safeway is better than this.
