Do NOT use pickup. I’ve been ordering pickup from this Safeway for years over nearby competitors even closer to home and had a few faults but nothing compares to the past month. My last 3 experiences have been below standards by far.
First, they overcharged me due to removing items that were part of a deal and not substituting (ex. Chips buy 3 for certain price). “no” other options available, and my charge doubles? Wrong. There were other options, they didn’t even offer or ask.
Second trip, I pick up and drive home, to discover all of my cold foods missing. Which I get it. Things happen.
Today, third time, many out of stock items and no offer of subs again, which I can deal with. What I can’t is being denied my order for 2+ hours and having to argue and do nothing further except push to get customer care. After I was alerted my order was ready for pick up, they texted saying there was an issue with my payment, although the app says I can pick up and shows a receipt. I go into billing and payments and check and update payment info (csv on two other cards). Talk with customer care to confirm I’m good and then follow up with the store via text (how they contacted me). Failed to get any response for over an hour until I called. To be told I still could not pick up. So back to customer care where they state there is no way they can deny my pick up as it was ready and paid. After many calls with the store and customer care and me stating they needed to figure it out vs offering solutions that inconvenience me further, they looked into it more and determined my order was good and I could pick up but requested I call the store (again) to tell them I was good. I requested they call the store as I had been through this TWICE already. The customer care rep did call back after calling the store to confirm I could pick up.
The store sucks. Help your customers, don’t blame them for system issues. Basic customer service; I guided the manager on how they could offer support/resolutions. Sad.

Unfortunately I was dragged over to this this Safeway on Friday December 19th to tackle a pressing matter. I realized this is where my real brother in law worked nights at Safeway in California. The customer service staff was illiterate in attempting to assist me in purchasing a car from F & F motors. The grocery store manager should have a pow wow with his team. I wouldn’t touch this Safeway with a 10 foot pole!

The U Scan registers now ONLY TAKE CARDS. No cash to pay or cash back. Have to go thru cashier's checkstand, often only one cashier. Lines can be LONG!
One of the stupidest things I have seen a store do.
Be prepared for a long wait it you're paying with cash or want cash back.

Two Weeks Later: I was in Safeway again yesterday, so I thought I would check on the rotisserie chickens to see if the situation I complained about has been fixed. I'm sorry to report that it has not. At least not completely. Some of the chickens did have time stamps, but several others did not. Safeway has a reputation for not bothering to train their staff -- especially behind the hot food and deli areas -- so maybe the word didn't get out to all the staff who work behind that counter. Or maybe it did and the lesson didn't sink in. I will say that the folks in the produce, bakery, and butcher areas in this store do know what they're doing.
Original post:
I'm getting tired of being lied to by the counter people in the hot food area in this Safeway. Twice now, I've gone to purchase a rotisserie chicken, only to find that there is no time shown on the bag to indicate how long ago the chicken was taken from the roaster. The first time this happened, when I asked about it, I was told the chicken had just been taken out of the oven. This time, I was told it was taken out only 45 minutes prior. In both cases, I get the chickens home only to find that they've obviously sat much longer than that in the warmer. I know why they do this. They want to get rid of as many rotisserie chickens as they can before commiting more to the rotisserie. Just smart business sense -- if they were honest about it! They could perhaps discount the older ones instead of lying to their customers. The saying goes, "Once, bitten, twice shy." I guess I wasn't "shy" enough the second time around. But no more: I'll be driving up the street, instead of down the street, next time to buy my rotisserie chickens at Walmart. They seem not only much more diligent about marking the packages, but they also charge less for them, too. Safeway: you've lost some business in an attempt not to waste a few old chickens! Good going!!
