After nearly twenty years, I decided to visit Harvey’s, and the experience offered an interesting mixture of strengths and areas for improvement. What follows is an assessment of the visit in three areas: customer experience and service, the restaurant environment and presentation, and the quality of the food itself.
Customer Experience and Customer Service:
Upon entering the restaurant, the initial interaction with the cashier felt somewhat distant. The young lady greeted me from across the room without making eye contact and with little expression, which made it difficult to tell whether she was even addressing me. In hospitality settings, first impressions matter. Customer service often begins with simple but meaningful gestures such as eye contact, a welcoming tone, and a genuine smile. When these elements are missing, the interaction can unintentionally feel disengaged for customers walking in.
A notable contrast appeared when another lady brought out and completed my order. She was exceptionally pleasant. She was warm, friendly, and genuinely kind. Her demeanor immediately elevated the experience and demonstrated how meaningful positive customer interaction can be in a restaurant environment.
During the visit, it was also noticeable that the first young lady appeared more animated and cheerful while interacting with coworkers behind the counter than when assisting customers. While friendly exchanges between staff are completely natural, the hospitality industry ultimately revolves around the guest experience, and extending that same warmth to customers would greatly enhance the interaction.
Environment, Cleanliness, and Restaurant Presentation:
The restaurant environment itself was excellent. The dining area appeared very clean and well maintained, with multiple customers present and a steady flow of activity. The seating areas were tidy, and the drink station as well as the counter area where customers access napkins, salt, pepper, and other condiments were all very clean and organized.
Overall, the restaurant gave the impression of being carefully maintained and regularly attended to by staff. Cleanliness and presentation play an important role in shaping a customer’s perception of a restaurant, and in this case the environment reflected a high level of attention to upkeep.
Food Review:
I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich combo, which included fries and an iced tea.
The fries were the first item I tried, and they made a strong impression. They were served hot, crispy, and well salted, exactly what one hopes for from freshly prepared home style fries. The exterior had a satisfying crispness while the interior remained soft, and they tasted as though they had just come out of the fryer.
The Buffalo Chicken Sandwich itself was also enjoyable. The buffalo sauce was mild and not particularly spicy, but it was still very flavorful and complemented the sandwich well. The chicken filet was made with white meat, thoroughly cooked, and remained juicy on the inside.
For toppings, I chose mayo, lettuce, pickles, jalapeños, salt and pepper, and Harv sauce. The pickles were especially good, crunchy and juicy, and added a satisfying texture to the sandwich. The lettuce tasted extremely fresh. The jalapeños were mild rather than spicy, and the herb sauce added a tangy flavor that worked nicely with the other ingredients. The bun was soft and satisfying, holding everything together well.
The iced tea was also refreshing and paired nicely with the meal.
