The roots of this venerable establishment were originally planted by Tennessee native Leroy “Van” Vandegrift, who moved with family to Oklahoma City, where he graduated from Central High. He served in the Army before working as a tool dresser in the oil fields of North Texas and began cooking for fellow roughnecks on rig sites. Around 1928, Van opened his first Pig Stand in a hotel in Wewoka, Oklahoma. It was a small little store serving barbecue such as the Pig Sandwich® and Ribs. The menu also included other types of sandwiches such as Liverwurst, Pimento, Chicken Salad, and Cream Cheese. In 1929 a second Pig Stand opened in Seminole and was then sold in 1935. Pig Stands were later opened in Wichita Falls, Texas and Wichita, Kansas.
On June 5, 1930, Van opened his third Pig Stand Location at 714 Highland in Shawnee. In the same year, Van married Thelma Maree Glenn. In 1935 the Shawnee store moved across the street to its present location.
Had dinner here last night . Normally all is good. Beans and curly fries were great. Sliced brisket was extremely dry and hard to even eat!

This was the absolute worst BBQ I've ever had. A two meat meal and a three meat meal and it was all left on the table hardly touched.
We arrived on a Saturday at 6:45 for reference The sliced brisket was rock hard and absent of any form of moist brisket. It literally was as stiff as the knife. The beans had absolutely zero flavor, the pulled pork was equally as dry as the briskt, and th cole slaw was 95% dressing and 5% cole slaw. The hot link was good.
I asked for a replacement of the brisket, and was give a equal portion serving as to what they originally served, but it was rubber. It literally had the elasticity of rubber.
My wife had turkey, chopped brisket, okra and mac-n-cheese. That mac-n-cheese was no doubt scrapped off the bottom of the pan. The turkey was bland and the chopped brisket must have been sitting out all day. The okra was just okra.
$67 worth of useless food. Completely wasted. I asked for the manager and was told they were gone for the day, so I left it at that.
First time visit and last time as well. I'd rather them had said they were out of the items than served that subpar dry food. I feel bad for wasting it, but there was no effort to make it right.
Do better please. The 1 star for the food was given simply so I could write the review

Bland okra with NO flavor. DRY tasteless meat. Asked for extra ranch for a pint of okra got 1. Fries cold. I just dont understand how places like this charge so much for flavorless food. Ever heard of seasoning tour food? Pecan pie has that hint of definitely of store bought. Last time you get 40.00 from me. Sad. 0/10!

It's great bbq and food. I love the stuffed spud with pulled pork. But the burgers and BBQ sandwiches are good too. The only thing is, is that the prices are unbelievably high.

A fantastic place, a must see to experience while in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Great barbecue of all types. This location is the original Van’s pig stand in Shawnee, Oklahoma. My father proposed marriage to my mother here back in the late 1950s. I always stop here for a bite to eat when I’m in town and enjoy the atmosphere service and food.
