I visited this restaurant a few weeks ago with my girlfriend and had a very disappointing experience. We waited at the entrance for close to 20 minutes with no one ahead of us, yet not a single staff member acknowledged us. Several employees walked by, made eye contact, and still did not greet us or offer any assistance.
The restaurant was only about half full, so the extended wait and complete lack of communication felt unusual and difficult to justify. To be transparent, it left us wondering whether our treatment had anything to do with the fact that my girlfriend is Black and I am Latino. While I cannot say for certain, the experience created an uncomfortable atmosphere that made us feel ignored and out of place.
When we eventually decided to leave, a staff member finally approached us to seat us, but at that point we had already waited long enough and chose to go elsewhere.
Since we were never seated, I cannot comment on the food, but the service alone was concerning enough that we do not plan to return. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, as every guest deserves consistent, respectful, and timely service regardless of who they are.
It's Definitely changed alot since I've been there about 8 years ago. I thought the food was disgusting, i did the buffet with the spatzle. The side of spatzle was cold and super oily, the food on the buffet hardly had anything a couple pieces of things here and there. There was no rolls, waited 20 minutes for them to bring rolls out only for them to be ice cold. The staff all seemed like young kids not having any idea of what was going on. I'm disappointed that we drove to Ohio to my family's 12 hrs from where I live now then an additional two hours to Columbus for gross food.

Walking into Schmidt’s, you’re immediately struck by the warm, Old-World atmosphere: dark wood booths, Bavarian décor, servers sometimes dressed in traditional attire, and occasionally even live polka or accordion music. The sense of history is very much alive.
On the food side, Schmidt’s is known for its hearty German fare. Their Bahama Mama sausage is a standout—the smoky, slightly spicy flavor has made it a local legend. The old-world sausage sampler is a smart pick if you want to sample a variety. As for sides, patrons often praise the potato salad, sauerkraut, and red cabbage.
No review of Schmidt’s would be complete without mentioning dessert: the jumbo cream puffs. These half-pound pastries are light, fluffy, and rich — a proper, indulgent ending to any meal.
Schmidt’s Sausage Haus in Columbus serves solid German fare in a lively, historic setting. The food was good, though not outstanding—our favorites were the soft pretzels with beer cheese, the brats, and the desserts. We noticed a new all-you-can-eat bar and wished we had tried it to sample more of the menu. That said, we loved the history, great service, and warm, inviting ambiance, which made the visit a memorable experience.

This place is an absolute gem, transporting you straight back in time. Walking in, you feel the history—a beautiful tribute to the immigrants who arrived here nearly 150 years ago, complete with old brick roads out front and a fantastic accordion two-piece band inside. Beyond the incredible atmosphere, the food is authentic, classic German fare at its best. The potato soup is wonderfully thick and creamy, and our entrées—the stuffed cabbage and sauerbraten—were perfect. Finish off your meal with the flawless cream puff! Add in the friendly staff, and you have an unforgettable evening.
