I had high hopes for this place, but unfortunately, they missed the mark in many areas. I booked reservations days in advanced, as my family and I wanted to try a good steakhouse. Online, it looked high-end, and was categorized as, "fine dining," which was exactly the experience we were looking for.
When we arrived, we were taken back by the very loud music. We were with our 10yr old daughter and we wanted to give her a fine dining experience. They apparently had live singers, but it wasn't even music that was relaxing, like jazz. It was very upbeat, hip-hop music. We felt like we had walked into a club. I was immediately turned off and wanted to walk out before we were even seated, but we didn't want to have to find another restaurant and risk having to wait for a table, so we reluctantly just sat down. I asked the hostess if the music was going on all night, and she said they would be there until 10pm, which basically would last for the duration of our dining experience.
We tried to just pretend to have a good time, but deep inside, both my husband & I were not happy. How can a restaurant called themselves a "fine dining" restaurant when there was nothing "fine" about it. It got worse, as we waited a solid 15 minutes before we were ever acknowledged by a waiter, which is unacceptable, especially for a place that's supposed to be "fine dining". My daughter was thirsty and wanted water, and since we had no server, I asked the hostess as she seated someone else, if she can get my daughter some water since she was thirsty. She brought the water and poured it into my daughter's glass, but didn't bother to ask if anyone else at the table wanted water. So she filled her glass and walked away. Water should be automatic and immediate.
I was already disappointed with all the loud, rowdy music, and the 15 minute wait to even be acknowledged by a server, although we were passed numerous times by multiple servers. My daughter was hungry, as were we, and we had no choice but to wait. We finally got a server assigned to take our order. The waiter offered us bread for the table, but failed disclose that there would be a charge for it. Of all the bread that was provided, only 4 pieces were edible, as they gave us about 4 very hard slices of bread; (the one that you would normally use for bruschetta). After we ordered, it took quite a bit of time before we received our food, which is okay as you don't want to rush "good food". However, when we finally received our food, we were hoping that the food would at least make up for the rest of the negative experiences, but, sadly it didn't. The steak was tasteless. My daughter even asked for salt! So we asked for salt & they provided very course balls of salt, so my daughter did the best she could with it. We also ordered macaroni and cheese, and unfortunately, it was so dry. It even had almost a spicy taste to it, as if they went heavy on the black pepper. It wasn't good at all. Not even my daughter ate the macaroni and cheese. We also ordered the organic chicken, and again, just bland tasting. The only thing that was "decent", was the mashed potatoes. That was basically it.
Nothing we ordered justified the high price tag. Not to mention the loud club-like music and the long wait for service. On the way to Mastros, we had passed another steak house that looked very eloquent, and appeared to have the exact vibe we were looking for. They had 50% more reviews than Mastros and all standing ovation about the food & service. We even thought about going in, but we had our heart set on Mastros, so we proceeded towards Mastros. After everything, my husband and I couldn't stop talking about how we should've just walked into the other restaurant. It looked so much nicer, more upscale and more professional. Next time, we will definitely try that one.
Sadly, we will never return to, nor recommend anyone to Mastros.

A 21-year-old member of our party couldn’t present her physical ID because she was waiting for a replacement after losing hers, and I didn’t have my ID either, so we couldn’t order drinks. When she tried to show it on her phone, we were told that pictures of IDs couldn’t be accepted, which is understandable. While another guest provided their ID, the server loudly announced in the quiet dining room that she was “21 in two months, you guys are killing me here,” then stormed off. We understand and respect the law and it’s not being served that upset us, but how it was handled, which was embarrassing and unnecessary.
The server then proceeded to avoid our table, and another staff member took over our food order without explanation. The birthday guest couldn’t get the correct birthday menus because her name was misspelled, despite her name being spelled correctly in the request and we were told it couldn’t be fixed after 10 PM. It’s a small thing, but it’s part of the experience and took away from her celebration.
Two steaks were cooked incorrectly, and when addressed, the server that took our food was defensive . At the end of the meal, I paid cash, but the server took my money and left without asking if I wanted my change, which was frustrating given the awful experience and that this was the girl’s only birthday celebration you could tell she was very upset.
The only reason I’m giving two stars is that the food itself is good, but the service and handling of the evening were horrible. This was surprising because I’ve had positive experiences here before.
Mastro’s managed to turn what should have been a premium steakhouse experience into a complete mis-steak. The wait was already dragging, but the real comedy started at the bar. If I have to wave down a bartender just to get a drink while three people are standing there, that is beyond ridiculous. That is not top-shelf service, that is bottom-barrel cluelessness. In a place charging steakhouse prices, the service should be sizzling, not asleep on the grill.
The whole staff energy felt half-baked. Nobody seemed locked in, nobody seemed sharp, and the bar service moved like it was marinating in slow motion. For an upscale NYC spot, it was astonishingly hard to get basic attention. I should not have to hunt down a drink like I am foraging in the wild just because the bartenders are too busy staring into space.
The vibe was just as bad. Instead of polished, elegant, and high-end, the room felt full of clowns. Not the kind of crowd or atmosphere you expect from a place trying to sell luxury. It felt more circus than steakhouse, more sideshow than fine dining. The whole place had this weird off-brand energy, like it wanted to be class but kept tripping over its own dress shoes. For a supposed upper-class restaurant in NYC, the atmosphere felt cheap, chaotic, and painfully off-cut.
And that is really the theme here: everything felt off. Off timing. Off service. Off crowd. Off attitude. Mastro’s wants to present itself as rare, but this experience was well done in the worst way. The service was dry, the atmosphere was tough to swallow, and the whole night left a bad taste before the food could even matter.
Plenty of places in NYC know how to raise the bar. Mastro’s somehow limboed under it. I refused it, and I will not be coming back.
We were entertaining two friends from Boston and one from DC and so we wanted to take them to a phenomenal steakhouse for dinner after our show and so we selected Mastro's Steak House
For a couple of hours we enjoyed cocktails at the bar, Edwin was our server and he made all of our cocktails absolutely perfectly the first time around. He even managed to create a couple of cocktails for our friends to their liking. Thank you so much for that Edwin.
Then we were shown to a wonderful corner table downstairs by the hostess for our dinner. Orlando came over and went over some of the specials. We ended up ordering the scallops for our appetizer which was absolutely out of this world. Then the four of us ordered various versions of the filet mignon and one friend ordered the tuna. Everyone kept raving over how perfectly well their fillets were cooked and how awesome they tasted. We had to conclude this "phenomenal"
meal and take Orlando up on his suggestion and so we ordered the butter cake for our desserts. That was quite frankly one of the best desserts we've ever had.
Our friends could not stop raving over their dinner at Mastro's. Thanks to the hostess, Edwin and Orlando for making this a wonderful, long lasting memory for our friends and our ourselves !!!
If you want a passive aggressive experience where you’re treated like a nuisance while trying to celebrate your birthday then you have the right place! Our waiter was rude and abrupt, when I spoke to him about it we went back and forth. Deciding to back down I simply waited for him to leave and then went to the front desk to request another waiter. No problems with the new waiter whatsoever. However, when I went to the bathroom the servers who assist in bringing food to and from tables decided to antagonize my guests by picking up the bread that was still fresh and untouched. And when asked to please let it they stated that they were only doing their job. How polite of them… To add a cherry on the cake they been proceeded to stand in eyesight and talk about our table while shooting looks at us. When I came back and my guests told me what happened I was in complete disbelief as I’ve been to mastros more times than I can count and never experienced anything like this before. We decided to just finish our meal and go. If you want great food and to be treated like your insignificant on your birthday then this is the right place for you!
