I am making this report not only as a loyal CAVA customer, but also as a mandated reporter and a deeply concerned human being.
I have visited many CAVA locations across New York City and have never witnessed anything like what I experienced today, January 28, 2025, at approximately 3:20 PM at this location.
As I was moving through the line to place my order, I observed a manager—later identified by employees as “Kathy”—screaming at the top of her lungs. She then aggressively walked to the back area, returned, and forcefully grabbed a hijab-wearing employee. While yelling, the manager invaded the employee’s personal space, removed her apron, and grabbed her by the hand, treating her in a manner that was completely inappropriate and alarming. She proceeded to drag the employee to the front area and placed her on what appeared to be a video call with another employee, all while continuing to shout.
Customers in the store were visibly disturbed. The woman in front of me and I exchanged looks, both clearly recognizing that what we were witnessing was not okay. We asked another employee if everything was alright, and they confirmed that it was not. They identified the individual as the manager on duty and shared that this behavior happens often.
As I moved toward the utensils area, the manager was still yelling. At that point, I genuinely feared that the behavior could be racially or religiously motivated, particularly toward the hijab-wearing employee and another staff member she was shouting at. The employee being yelled at appeared visibly distressed, with red eyes, yet the manager continued her aggressive behavior.
When the manager noticed that I was taking photos, she retreated to the back. Shortly afterward, other employees appeared to speak to her—seemingly addressing her behavior—but this only caused her to become more aggressive. She began yelling in Spanish, pulled out her phone, and started recording employees while they were actively working. This all occurred in the kitchen area, and I am confident that security footage will corroborate these events.
This was a deeply disturbing and unacceptable experience to witness as a customer. CAVA urgently needs to investigate this manager’s conduct. Her actions demonstrate a severe lack of leadership, professionalism, and basic human decency. There are appropriate and respectful ways to manage workplace issues, and this was not one of them.
Many of the employees involved appeared to be in their early twenties. As the adult and manager on duty, she has a responsibility to handle situations with care, emotional intelligence, and professionalism. Her behavior could have serious implications for employees’ mental health and well-being.
I strongly urge CAVA management to take this report seriously and address this matter immediately through proper investigation, accountability, and retraining.
