We’ve eaten at Boqueria many times and have never had an issue until tonight.
We walked in at 6:15pm on a Friday and were told there was a 1.5 hour wait. Fine, we stepped outside. I checked OpenTable and immediately saw multiple reservations available, including a 6:30pm for two. I booked it and walked back in.
I told the same host I had just spoken to that I found availability online. He said something along the lines of, “I do that because some tables are coming in late.” He then tried to find my reservation, had trouble locating it, asked me to show it, and eventually found it in the system.
At that point, instead of seating us, he paused and then said, “Actually, you’ll need to book as a three because of your child.”
For context, our daughter is 15 months old, sits on our lap, and we’ve dined here before without ever being told we needed to book a separate seat for her. Nothing about the setup has changed. They have not once given us a high chair.
I asked him directly, so should we cancel the reservation, and he said yes.
So after being told there was a 1.5 hour wait, then proving there was immediate availability, then confirming a reservation in their own system, we were ultimately told we couldn’t be seated under that reservation anyway.
We canceled and left.
It was honestly outrageous.
Go down the street to Pil Pil where the experience is seamless and, frankly, the food is significantly better.
We won’t be coming back.

I am a loyal Boqueria fan and I’ve gone to multiple locations across multiple cities, and I have favorite dishes I love to order every time. This time, the pan con tomate (one of my must-haves) was so stale it was not even edible. Out of 3 pieces, only one was soft and the other two were so hard the bread was hard to bite. We shared this feedback with our waitress but she didn’t do anything about it - no apology, replacement or comp. Additionally, the bill was brought to our table with a QR code option to conveniently pay right at our table. I have used this function many times at other restaurants, but was disappointed to find this was the only time I was charged an extra $4 to pay my bill? The charge says platform fee, it’s not a credit card or tip or service charge. That should have been made very clear before I paid, it is totally unnecessary as I would happily wait for the server to take my card and charge it manually. D

Our server recommended a few of the tapas we ordered and it was all great. Definitely seems to be a family friendly spot- not necessarily what I was looking for on a date night but seems nice for those who are looking for it

If you really want to enjoy original Tapas and you don’t have the time to go to Barcelona or some of the many other wonderful destinations in Spain then get over to Boqueria at 1460 2nd Ave in NYC. By the time you leave you’ll have felt like you enjoyed a meal with the locals in Espana.
We first went 3 weeks ago and we were both impressed but I was curious enough to want to go back again to see if it was the real deal and by writing this review you can judge for yourself. I just want to acknowledge Jose the host who did a great job by getting us set up with a table within minutes of our appointed time and to the excellent wait staff too.
As in NYC you have all kinds of restaurant, eating establishments etc. as they do in Spain, however Spain seems to have a wealth of Tapas restaurants and eateries where there are small Share plates with one or 2 bites on some and a few more on others. On our first visit we sampled many of the offerings but last night we shared 10 though we ordered 2 duplicates along with a very refreshing pitcher of sangria.
We enjoyed the Serrano ham, the renown Manchego cheese, the anchovies, the fried calamari, the tuna, the gambas, (shrimp,) 2 plates of the pulpo, (octopus,) 2 Bikini serano sandwiches, and the special chocolate cheese cake from Basque. I’ll add photos with the labels for each serving. Like I said before if you’ve ever wanted to go to Spain for authentic Spanish food but haven’t had the opportunity here’s your chance to do it in NYC!
Thank you all for a great meal!
