One Star – Avoid at All Costs
I ordered a large tray of macaroni and cheese from The Refuge in Melville, Long Island, for a family gathering, and it was hands-down one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had.
They charged an absurd $125 for what was supposed to be their “famous” cheesy macaroni with a golden breadcrumb topping. The menu and their own photos show classic elbow macaroni baked with a creamy cheese sauce and a crisp, buttery breadcrumb crust. What we actually received was a tray of bland bow-tie (farfalle) pasta swimming in a thin, barely-there “cheese” sauce that tasted like watered-down Velveeta. There was zero breadcrumb topping not a single crumb. It looked and tasted nothing like what was advertised.
When we opened it at the gathering, literally no one touched it after the first bite. Even the kids who normally devour mac and cheese pushed it away. It was greasy, under-seasoned, and somehow both dry and watery at the same time. We ended up throwing almost the entire tray in the trash.
To top it all off, when I called to complain and ask for a refund (since the dish was completely different from what we ordered and paid for), the manager was rude, dismissive, and flat-out refused. Their exact words were “that’s just how we make it now.” No apology, no offer to remake it, nothing.
$125 essentially stolen for inedible food and terrible customer service. Do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. The Refuge clearly doesn’t care about quality or honesty. Never again.

Ordered “Mac and Cheese with bread crumbs” as a cater item. This is what I received. They refused to give me a refund. This is not even macaroni they gave me bow tie and a sprinkle of shredded cheese. This is unacceptable and embarrassing

The server was excellent. The food was just okay. I left an item behind and I called to ask if they had found it and they had. I went back to retrieve my item and they conveniently misplaced my item. Manager was not helpful at all. Needless to say I will not be back nor will I recommend to anyone. Also I emailed corporate and never received a reply. Horrible customer service.

The Refuge is absolutely top-tier when it comes to amazing food, drinks, and atmosphere! 🍽️🍸 From start to finish, our experience was flawless.
The steak was cooked to perfection—juicy, flavorful, and melt-in-your-mouth good. Pair that with their ultra-creamy, decadent mac and cheese, and you’ve got comfort food on another level 🔥🧀🥩.
Their desserts? Incredible. Sweet, beautifully plated, and the perfect way to end the meal. And don’t even get me started on the drinks—crafted with precision, bold flavors, and just the right kick. 🍷🍰
The service was just as excellent—attentive, friendly, and fast. Whether you’re out for a romantic dinner or a night with friends, The Refuge delivers every time. I’ll definitely be back!
