I had eaten at Kroll's years ago, but the standards have gone down significantly, while the prices have gone up. Very unsatisfied with the experience - For being "Voted No. 1 in North Dakota" by the Food Network, this restaurant left both me and my girlfriend disappointed - and hungry.
The diner itself was just that - It's a diner, nothing more, nothing less. I've eaten in quite a few diners, and this is (and has been) middling at best. The atmosphere was fine, but there was a cook/worker/friend of the staff who had come off of work being obnoxiously loud and annoying, and the staff just put up with it.
He was constantly talking and trying to get the attention of the workers and people coming in - Bro, sometimes people just want to have a nice meal in peace - If you work on staff, tell this dude to LEAVE, regardless of whether you're friends with him or not.
Next, the food - We ordered a Large Grilled Chicken Salad and Cheese Curds to share - The Salad was $14..... which was thought was steep, but we figured the portion might be large, since it was a diner ---- instead, we were given a salad that had browned iceberg lettuce which barely filled the skillet it was placed inside. It was mostly tomatoes, and cheese, none of which were very good. The chicken was cut into tiny, little pieces, and probably was only 1/3 of a chicken breast.
(I will grant you - the Ranch dressing was one of the high points of our meal.)
For the amount of money we paid for the salad, this was insanely overpriced. It would be a large side salad at some places, maybe causing $5-6 dollars. Not worth it.
The cheese curds.... were fine. They weren't bad, but again, the serving side is the issue. $10 for 16 tiny cheese curds is not an appropriate amount of food to money.
The best thing about the meal was the speed, which surprised me, because I've always been told that Kroll's was very slow -- Luckily, we were there late, so maybe that's the reason why - But we did get our food quickly, so that's why it's not a 1 star review.
With the tip, it ended up being $30 - For a salad and cheese curds. Not worth it and a waste of a meal for us. We left hungry, but didn't want to order anymore over-priced tiny portioned food.
I don't understand how so many people think this diner is good - there are a ton of other options in Fargo that you could go to that might be better (and we will) The only thing was that we ate late after a concert, so Kroll's was one of our only nearby choices. Next time, we'll choose better - I encourage you to do the same, unless you like paying too much for mid food.
TL;DR - People being obnoxious to customers need to be told to leave by the staff, not encouraged. Food and portions were not acceptable for the price.
Lower prices, increase portion sizes, get it together.
