I have eaten at The Baker’s Box a handful of times, and while it has never been great, I have never felt inclined to leave a negative review when often what someone does or doesn’t like is a matter of subjective taste. Until now.
Was the tuna edible? Yes. Was it good? Hahaha. It was basically tuna stew. Think Subway levels of mayo, but with some added seasonings. It was literally dripping all over. The fries? Edible in the sense that they were, at least, cooked. And this could be just a matter of taste and it could have been an off day for the kitchen, but the two times I had them they were mushy. Not just soft. Mushy. The breads for the sandwiches were fine. Nothing special, but also nothing bad. The gyro was decent, though if you want a great gyro, Pita Express and Blue Sky can offer you much better.
Now for what prompted me to write this review. I had a king cake. I get a king cake every year from various local establishments. The one from The Baker’s Box was raw. It looked, tasted, and smelled like raw dough. It was, in fact, inedible. Half of the king cake was hollow. The four inchish tall king cake had a two inch gap inside between the top crust and the rest of it. There should be little to no gap in this type of baked good. The Baker’s Box is owned by a pastry chef, yet this king cake resembled and tasted like something a culinary student might make in their first week of pastry school. Had this been a cheap item, the cost wouldn’t have mattered and I would have gone on with my day. But for $25 I expected a properly executed king cake.
We returned the king cake. The young lady that assisted us was very nice, and she went to get the owner for us.
He was rude from the offset. No greeting. No concern. Just a curt, “what’s wrong with it?” We told him it was raw. He dug his hands in it, with his fingernails all up in there. Side note: if he wanted to convince us it was not raw and that it was fine to eat, well he now ruined it by scraping his fingernails in it. Gross, unhygienic behavior. He said it’s not raw, and that it was “cheese.” Respectfully, no. Two things can be true. There was in fact cheese. And it was also raw. A simple poke of the king cake would tell anyone that it was raw. Not even the slightest spring back. Complete deflation. We said we didn’t agree and that it was raw. This interaction lasted all of 30 seconds. Before I even had a chance to point out the other areas that showed it was raw, and before I could say anything about half of it being hollow, he had already lost his patience. It took 30 seconds for this grown man to lose his cool because he received some criticism.
He then slammed the lid shut, yanked the box off the counter, and forcefully dumped it into a trash can that the box didn’t even fit in. He then stormed off without another word. This seemed to be his way of swearing without saying anything. Absolutely disgusting and unprofessional behavior. I have never, not once, seen a restaurant worker, an owner no less, display such a level of immaturity. It’s really disappointing that in 2026 a grown man thinks it appropriate to respond to criticism with aggression. Because that’s what this was. Aggression. He took his anger at me out on the box, but it was made quite clear that he was angry at me for disagreeing with him.
The young lady that worked with us to issue a refund was perfectly nice and composed during all of this. She apologized for the king cake, which she likely didn’t make and had no control over. She acted in a professional and mature manner from start to finish.
So no, I would not recommend this place to anyone. Owners that cannot handle criticism and cannot address customer concerns in a mature, respectful, and professional manner deserve no one’s patronage.
Unfortunately, the mediocre food and terrible customer service are hiding behind the fun and interesting decor. The inside of the restaurant is really rather impressive. Sad. This place could be so much better with responsible and respectful leadership.
