I'll never forget the first time I had a Smash Burger. It was in Southern California. Best Burger I ever had. When I left the military and headed back to the east coast I was sad because it meant no more Smash Burger.
Until I found one in Raliegh and headed there immediately. It took me back to that first experience. Quality Burger, Smash fries with great flavor. I missed it so much.
The only issue with the Raliegh site is that it's near Falls of Neuse and I live in West Cary. That's too far to drive. So imagine my excitement seeing one in Durham that's significantly closer.
I came in and I thought they were closing. I'm used to seeing bottled drinks and products within reach at the register. None of that. No music playing.
The lady at the register didn't engage me, I had to ask her how she was doing. I asked for a chicken Smash burger, Smash fires and a drink. She put in the wrong order of fries and I had to correct it.
I wasn't given a order number like they do in Raleigh. I sat within view of the staff. Not too many people there. I noticed the two employees on the floor were intermittently on their phones and then stopping when a customer needed something. I've never seen that before in a Smash Burger.
My order comes and as you can see in the picture. It is just a chicken patty between two buns. The Burger was bland, and the fries might have as well been regular fires. In Raliegh they are covered with rosemary and everything that makes them smash fries.
I ate everything because I was hungry, but I didn't leave happy. If this was my first Smash Burger experience I don't think I would ever want to come back to one again.
I rarely go into Raleigh, but I know if I am going. I stop the Smash Burger there.
I hope things improve at this site.

The food was good, the service was a single person up front at the counter. The interior is very tired, water stained walls, dim lights etc. We weren't sure it was open even standing in the doorway. They had a solid sanitation rating and the restroom was clean. 4 burgers, 4 fries, 4 sodas, $70.
