I've told multiple friends directly for years that this is the Worst Food Lion in west side Charlotte™ -- but I've continued going to it because it's the closest to my house and the staff has always been friendly enough. I just had to remember to be extra vigilant with produce--as I've seen moldy produce multiple times on display--or check expiration dates as I've gotten home a handful times only to discover what I just bought had already expired. I just got used to keeping eyes open and keeping it pushing.
Today however, as I was going through self-checkout, an employee approached me and proceeded to argue with me about my ringing up three bags of cereal. Since two of the bags were the same brand and flavor, I rang one of those bags twice and hit the third another time. This baffled the employee, who didn't know how to read their own log of the transactions and continued to argue with me about my not ringing up a bag of cereal even though I could physically point to all bags being accounted for on their screen and my own.
They never apologized or acknowledged their own mistake in the exchange, instead curtly still trying to imply I had done something wrong in my ringing items up despite their acknowledging all items were accounted for on the bill. Once I had finished ringing up all my items and paid, they hit me with a "did you ring up that water?" on my way out the door. Not watching to see if I did or checking their own log--which they had already demonstrated they had in the palm of their hand--and that tells me everything I need to know about this employee and interaction. I was in no way surprised to come here and see several other reviews from disgruntled shoppers who also have been accused of stealing from the self-checkout.
I've shopped at this grocery store for nearly a decade now, usually spent a hundred or more dollars a week and I've let a lot of things slide I bet other customers wouldn't, but that ended today. Nobody likes to be accused of stealing. Don't open a self checkout if you can't allow customers to use it without haranguing and driving them away.
