La Rumba is a fantastic choice, all-around. The house marg special is really great and their "upgrade" margs are better than a lot of the other Mexican restaurants in town. I always get the whole fried tilapia, but their braised beef ribs are amazing, as are so many of the other dishes. I love all the side choices. What I like most, however, is it's one of the few places in AVL where you can show up with 10+ people with very little notice and get sat reasonably quickly, and have a server and kitchen who nails the order and knows how to manage a larger party. My last visit was the second year I have gone for my birthday dinner and I will probably do it again next year because I can't think of another place in AVL that will let you show up with almost 20 people and can provide such a great all-around experience.

This Mexican restaurant truly won us over! The food is absolutely spectacular—every dish bursts with authentic flavor. The service is flawless, with staff who are both attentive and incredibly quick. On top of that, the prices are very reasonable, making the whole experience even better. Honestly, it’s one of the best Mexican restaurants we’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting. If you’re looking for an amazing Mexican dining experience, this place is an absolute must!

I’m disappointed this place seems to have gone downhill. Went there for my birthday meal yesterday and first and foremost, our server- Jenny, had a horrible attitude. I asked a couple questions regarding some things I had on the menu in the past, both meal and a specialty cocktail. She seemed to be bothered I had asked those questions along with the fact I needed just a few more minutes to decide, so she then doesn’t come back to take our orders for 13 minutes. Then when she did come back, she asked me questions about my meal choices as if I was stupid. The stank look on her face after I completed placing my order was the “icing” on my birthday-cake visit! (No pun intended) I have worked in the service industry for 14 years and this is not how you treat guests in your establishment. We decided to just share a meal due to I was having such an unpleasant experience and glad we did so we could get the heck outta here. My meal was so amazing the first time we went here about 2 years ago and now…..“plthplth”. We won’t be returning!!

La Rumba is a great Mexican food restaurant. The food is consistently delicious. Things just got better! My wife and I ate there last night and had our usual meal; however, upon paying the bill I noticed it was a little less than usual. I checked the check and discovered to my surprise that the charge for iced tea was reduced. The charge for sweet tea was $1.25 and for unsweetened tea was $.99. What a refreshing change. The night before we ate at Carrabba’s in Arden and paid almost $4.00 per glass of tea. La Rumba will have my business and patronage for years to come! I realize that a $3 difference may seem inconsequential to many but to me it’s a big deal. Thank you, La Rumba!!!

I recently dined at La Rumba and expectations were not met. We came for a family dinner + drinks. I wanted to see if it lived up to its title of the Best Eating American Restaurant in AVL and am sad to say it didn't. The service was slow, the food was mediocre, and the ambiance was lacking. Service: We were greeted at the door and seated immediately. Our server came over quickly to get our initial drink order, but was very slow to return. Subsequent visits to take orders, bring drinks, food, boxes, dessert, and the check were all very slow. For context, we were 1 of 4 tables that were occupied. Ambience: It is a big space that is well lit with a nice bar and fun wall decor. The music was playing when we arrived, but was silent shortly after. I asked the hostess to please turn the music on, she walked away and then I asked the server before it was back on. It was clear that music and the general vibe of the restaurant didn't have much thought. Food: We ordered the following: - Chips & Salsa: OK, the salsa was fresh, but lacking in flavor and was quite cold. The chips were good. - Cazuela del Chef: This was quite tasty. The flavor, textures, and temperature were perfect. The presentation killed it though. This is a soupy dish and was served on a plate. The portion was very large, so it was basically a big wet plate. - Mojarra Frita: This was not good. There was no seasoning on the fish and it was over cooked. The fish was very greasy, especially on the under side. It did not have much flavor. - Grilled Shrimp Plate: This was good. The shrimp had a nice sear and flavor. - Kids grilled chicken: this was great! Wonderfully seasoned and cooked to perfection. Sides: platanos, refried black beans, red rice, grilled veggies, fried yucca. All of these were really good! Great flavors, cooked to perfection, good temperature and textures. - Tres Leches: This was not good. The cake was dense and dry. Seems like it might have been made yesterday. - Flan: This was very bad. It was dense and almost gristly, like it have been made with flour or a thickener like xanthan gum. The flavor was fairly bland and almost bitter with the flavor of burnt sugar that had absorbed into the custard. It had no texture or flavor related to a fresh delicate custard. It was then garnished with too much Hershey's chocolate syrup. All around a very bad dish. Cocktails: We got two Margaritas that were exceptionally good. I'm forgetting the names, but one was something like The Christiana (it had Casamigos Reposado & Gran Marnier or Curaçao), and the other was similar. They had a wonderful fresh flavor, well balanced, perfectly iced, perfect amount of salt rim garnish, and in two very cool glasses. A few things I would do differently next time... - try other menu items - not order desert A few things La Rumba could do differently... - more attentive service - more consistent music - use a different dish for Cazuela del Chef - improve Mojarra Frita, Flan, Tres Leches
