A terrific modestly priced Mexican restaurant. Sonora is in a safe Longfellow neighborhood of S. Minneapolis. The large menu takes full advantage of Mexican cuisine's ability to create endless combinations from a few flat breads, a handful of vegetables and a few meats.
Somehow I have never had elote before. This is a grilled cob of corn with garlic, cilantro, chile powder, mayo, cheese, garlic, and I think some lime. Fantastic. A tequila old fashioned also disappeared. (Most tables were drinking beer.) My dining partner had an excellent marguerita. Salads, chips, guac, and enchilada rounded out the meal.
One comment. The Sonora serves very mild seasoning. NOT hot, spicy, picante. This fits the taste of many in MN but if you want something closer to a Mexican experience, ask for spicy or picante. (Chile or pepper or salsa are foods not the heat taste.) Although authentic Mexican spiciness is furiously debated in Mexico, in MN, this is a matter of personal preference.

Best burritos in Minneapolis! Service is fast and the drinks were amazing!
Very clean and nice environment. We got an elote, chicken, and burrito. Our waiter was hard to communicate with and the table was so wobbly our drinks kept spilling. Unfortunately the burrito and elote were extremely flavorless. When we spoke to our waiter he stated the burrito was almost fully eaten so there’s nothing he would do and refused to get us another staff member lol. Thats when I took a photo of the burrito with only a few bites taken (to try it with different sauces). Gotta give him props in the disrespectful department because that has NEVER happened to me before… like???Anywhoo we asked someone else and had a very nice lady talk to us and take the burrito off and liked the feedback. Overall I’d say it’s a nice place we just didn’t enjoy the food.
First time eating here. Probably the last for several reasons
1. Its the only thing I had for dinner last night and had diarrhea all morning from something in it. I had the Burrito de Alambre, which has shrimp, steak and chicken. Dont know if something wasn't cooked or cross contaminated. Didn't have a lot of flavor. It might have been the chicken as my wife had diarrhea last night and she only ate the.chicken quesadilla.
2. We ordered a chicken quesadilla which was blah. No real flavor. It didn't come with refried beans as the picture showed.
3. We ordered guac, $14.00, and got a small container. The menu said it came with chips and salsa. We got NO CHIPS AND NO SALSA.
4. We ordered queso with chirizo, $11. It said we were supposed to get chips with it. NO CHIPS.
So 4 items for 4 separate people and dinner was ruined.
Called to speak to a manager. Was told there was no manager on duty and to call back Monday. Hard to believe no manager on a busy Saturday night.
Totally not happy with this restaurant and experience.
UPATE: Called at 1215pm on Monday to speak with mgr and was told no mgr in today. Told me to call tomorrow. Mgr would be in all day tomorrow.
