We stopped in for dinner, but after the appetizers decided not to order more food. The poutine was underwhelming and the whitefish tatertots were over cooked and bland. The tater tots came with a lemon aioli that was bitter and did nothing to improve the dish. The staff was amazing. All were friendly and seemed to be genuinely happy to help and offer suggestions. Service was prompt. The restaurant has great exposed brick and historical photos. I would return to enjoy their 24 brews on tap, the staff, and the atmosphere. I'll pass on their food though.

To begin - I like the place. I eat there now and then. I think they have the best naked wings in town and their Chicken-Lemon-Quinoa soup is super. Lots of other menu items are really good too. The staff is always really great. The location is also great. BUT - I have a real issue with this thing called the Transparency Fee. This whole thing couldn't be LESS transparent. If it costs Iron Bay $20 to put a burger on the table - charge $20. The price charged for menu items should include the cost of the food, the cooks and dishwashers and wait staff, the rent, the heat, the cost of cleaning and upkeep, etc., etc. That's how it's always been. The menu prices as stated shouldn't be less - and then offset when the bill comes by plugging in a foggy 4% "transparency fee". If the sting of higher prices is what management is trying to avoid - consider the sting of the surprise Transparency Fee (to those who even notice it) to your customers. If the salary of the waitstaff is bolstered by gratuities - so be it. I'm fine with that. I was told the fee is to help give them a more livable base wage. I asked my waitress once how much she made and how often she's gotten a raise in the 5 years she said she's worked there. Based on her response, it sure didn't seem like the transparency fee has given much of a boost to her base salary. She still relies mostly on tip income - as before. Question: The next time I go will the Transparency Fee be higher because they need some extra money to pay for natural gas - or increases in the cost of toilet paper? The cost of their goods and services need to be embedded in the price of the items they sell - including their well deserved profit. That's American capitalism. That would be transparent. I applaud management's interest in paying the waitstaff a livable wage. Just do it then, and raise your prices if needed. Toot your horn that your slightly higher prices (4% higher?) help support higher base salaries for wait staff. Quit the sneaky "transparency fee" shell game.
