The clear expectation is that customers work for free at self checkout, scanning and bagging our own items through a system that doesn't even take cash. They added the dystopian cherry on top this year with an AI monitoring system at self checkout. If you scan your items any faster than a glacial pace, you're flagged a thief. I’ve been falsely accused of stealing by this system three times this year because I had two things in my hand at once or I obstructed the overhead security camera (I'm tall). This is a grocery store. It’s not complicated. Spend money hiring cashiers not developing 1984 George Orwell tech that makes the experience objectively worse for everyone involved. I honestly fell bad for the SINGLE employee who has to monitor all 7 self checkouts. Get it together Hannies.
