Regularly missing major fruit and veg (no broccoli?). Sells rotten food, bought a bag of potato that had eyes on them.

I shop at this Safeway fairly often, but my experiences have been extremely uncomfortable. As a black customer, I’ve noticed a clear pattern of profiling. I am frequently followed around the store, and when I’m checking out or paying, staff or security often hover over me in a way that feels unnecessary and intrusive. I have been in the produce department once at exactly 7am, when no one else was in the store, and security was called over the intercom to produce department, and lo and behold a security guard came by and stood watching me. I was the only one in the entire store! Why was security being called?! I have also grabbed a sushi platter once and had the Asian male chef ( Not sure he still works there) from the sushi section follow me to the register and watch me pay! Why is a chef following me?! It creates an environment where you feel watched rather than welcomed. And several people in my apartment also have this same experience, and most of them go all the way to Giant than to be subjected to this. What makes this even more frustrating is the blatant double standard I’ve personally witnessed. One Saturday, I saw a white man openly steal a fruit bowl. Security followed him outside, where he proceeded to eat the fruit in front of the store and even offered some to the security guard when confronted. Shockingly, nothing happened — he was not stopped or held accountable in any way, he crossed the road and left! It was one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen. Meanwhile, black customers are subjected to constant surveillance for simply shopping — including by staff members. There is a particular night-shift clerk (always wears a red t-shirt, glasses, and hefty) who regularly behaves in an accusatory manner, making the experience especially uncomfortable. Being treated like a suspect every time you enter a grocery store is exhausting and unacceptable. That said, I have seen the store manager ( I think) on some mornings, and he seems polite and professional, which gives me some hope that this is an issue that could be addressed with proper leadership and training. Safeway needs to seriously examine its loss prevention practices, pricing accuracy, store cleanliness, and implicit bias. Everyone deserves to shop without being profiled, hovered over, or made to feel like a criminal based on their race. Additionally, pricing accuracy needs improvement. Shelf price signs do not always match what is charged at checkout, which adds another layer of frustration to the shopping experience. The self-checkout area also needs attention. The space behind the self-checkout stations is grimy and visibly dirty, with debris stuck to the floor, making the area feel neglected and unhygienic.
