I had a very disturbing experience at Safeway on March 5th around 7:45–8:00 PM at the self-checkout area. A male customer wearing a FedEx uniform was aggressively and loudly accused of stealing by a female employee working the self-checkout. She yelled the accusation across the area, embarrassing him in front of other customers. The customer clearly had not stolen anything and even showed his receipt to prove he paid for his items. After proving he paid, he calmly asked the employee for an apology. Unfortunately, she refused to apologize, even though she had just publicly accused him and embarrassed him in front of everyone. It is unacceptable for an employee to loudly accuse someone of theft without verifying the facts first. Most retail companies, including Safeway, have customer service policies that require employees to treat customers with respect, avoid public accusations, and verify purchases before making claims of theft. If there is a concern, it should be handled professionally and privately—not by yelling across the store. The situation could have easily been resolved respectfully. Instead, the employee chose to humiliate a paying customer and then refused to take accountability when she was proven wrong. I hope management reviews this incident and reminds staff that professionalism, respect, and proper loss-prevention procedures should always come before public accusations.
