Rating: ⭐⭐ (2/5) - Disappointing Experience
Title: Overpriced and Underwhelming
We had high hopes for our Saturday launch at Dolan Uyghur in Rockville MD but left thoroughly disappointed. The signature Whole Lamb Tandoor Kebab was dry, tough, and excessively salty, tasting like it had been reheated from leftover. The stewed beef portion was tiny for the price. Even the "green tea" was just faintly colored, tasteless water. Service was lacking—our waitress was inexperienced, didn’t announce dishes, and only checked on us once in over two hours, with no tea refills unless requested. For the premium price, neither the food nor service felt worth it.
I'm torn on this review. I love trying new cuisines, and this was a bit hit or miss. (Mostly hit). The atmosphere is lovely, it's a very nice space. The server and hostess were SO nice and helpful, and that is the #1 thing that makes a good restaurant experience. But, the food, while having great subtle flavors, was wildly underseasoned. The Kawa Goshnan was the best thing, fried perfectly, delicious filling, lovely yogurt dip - but it definitely needed salt incorporated in the dish and not just added at the end. (With added salt it was very good - had it been cooked with more salt, it would have been next level). The Kawa Samsa had the same filling, but a softer dough - also generally good, but again, needed salt throughout.
The entrees were pretty good, but also underseasoned (and with a few more issues). My daughter liked the Signature Rice Noodle, but had to add salt and heat (she asked for it medium, but said it lacked spice at all) ... I got the Spicy Tofu, and asked for extra spicy - and it was okay but the texture was so soft, and it was very underseasoned. It was barely spicy, and the tofu didn't seem sauteed or fried at all (it was listed as sauteed) - it was, well, like super soft. Like soft tofu (the kind with water, not silken) mixed with sauce but not crisped at all. I have leftovers (the portions were generous), but will bake them to try to get some texture on them. The server (who was so nice) brought us a pour jar of chili oil and salt, and with those additions the dishes were MUCH better. (I still would have liked more vegetarian options, and more texture in the tofu). My husband had the Rock Pot Soup and it was a lot more noodles and a very light broth than it looks like in the picture. He said it was fine, but he wished he'd gotten a kebab instead, and he added a lot of salt and chili oil. (Though he's not a spice person.) And we had a pot of black chai, which supposedly came with free refills, but they just added water to the original teabag, so the second pot was pretty weak.
This is hard, because the restaurant was so lovely and so friendly, and maybe we just all have a much less sensitive palate than the cuisine requires. But I wish the tofu had texture, and there was more salt and spice in everything. I recommend the experience, and am sure some things they have are delicious (it was very packed, and that one appetizer was banging), but we found it hit or miss. Excellent and very kind service, though.
