Never seen something so stupid as having to ask somebody for a bag at the self checkout. You have to stop what you’re doing and request i’m someone in the store a paper bag. And if it isn’t bad enough to have to deal with paper bags, you’re getting a paper bag that doesn’t have a handle.

Experience is awful. Bought a tiny cauliflower for $4.99 which in our Harris Teeter is either sold for $1.00 or thrown to the trash bin.

This Safeway is a standard grocery option for the area, but it often falls short of the experience offered by nearby competitors. While I visit regularly for convenience, a few recurring issues keep it from being my primary store: Management seems unresponsive to customer feedback. For years, I’ve requested they stock Breyers "Extra Creamy Vanilla"—the brand’s healthiest option with better ingredients—yet they continue to stock less desirable varieties. Because of this, I now do 50% of my shopping at Giant instead. Additionally, they frequently run out of staples like French baguettes by 5 or 6 PM. I often see the discounted meat section featuring items several days past their safe consumption date. For the health of the community, these should be discounted much earlier while still safe, rather than being left on the shelf once bacterial growth becomes a risk. The produce selection is fairly unremarkable compared to other local stores. Furthermore, the floor staff often lacks knowledge of their own inventory; I’ve frequently been told an item is out of stock, only to find it myself moments later. In an expensive area like Bethesda, shoppers expect a certain level of management and attention to detail. I truly hope the leadership here takes a page out of Giant’s playbook regarding customer retention and stock management. It’s a decent store, but it could be much better with a bit more care. UPDATE: In the spirit of fairness, I want to note that I have seen some recent improvements in the store’s atmosphere and organization. It seems like they are starting to put more effort into the shopping experience, which I genuinely appreciate. I hope this trend continues, as this location has the potential to be a top-tier neighborhood store if management stays focused on these positive changes!

Zero star for customer service. I came to the store to buy 6 gift cards today 12/8/25 around 3pm. There was only 1 line open. Tried self check out but did not work for gift card so the lady (white, around 70s) in charge of self check out sent me to the cashier to check out. I asked if she could help me there at the customer service counter since she was just finished helping someone there but she refused to help me and insisted I had to go to the cashier. At the line: after 10 minutes waiting in line due to the cashier took a long time to ring up the lady in front of me then messed up with the payment for her, the cashier sent me to the customer service because he could not do it. There were 3 people putting there heads together for about 5 minutes to figure how to solve the messed up payment for the customer in front of me. Then one of them (the Indian man) went on to help that customer. The 2nd staff stood by looking around doing nothing. The 3rd one (was the white lady that refused to help me and sent me to the line at the fist place) kept herself busy with customers in the self checkout lines who came 20 minutes after me while making me wait. I waited for another 10 minutes for the Indian man to help the other lady. While the Indian man kept asking the white lady to help me with the gift card, she ran around helping other people in the self checkout lines to scan every single items in their shopping cards. The 2nd staff stood behind the Indian male staff watching. She once asked me how she could help but when i told her i needed help with the gift card she turned her face away. So when the white female staff was done with self checkout lines, she came to the customer station to find me still waiting there. She had to spend a moment to chat with the 2nd staff who had been standing idle for the entire time before reluctantly moved to the counter to help me. Then because my transaction is over $1000 she had to check my ID even though I use my over 15 year old Safeway account. It took me over 30 minutes to pay for only 6 gift cards. It was a very frustrated experience. I was ready to drop the gift cards right there and then to go to CVS that it could have been 3 minute transaction but I did stay to witness the level of insanity this store is running.
