If I could give a 0 star, I would 1000 times Swann Rd E, Fort Washington, MD 20744
I’m extremely disappointed with the experience I had at this Safeway location, and as a long-time customer, this visit was the final straw.
I purchased a $44 turkey on November 25th, planning to cook it the same day. The moment I opened the packaging, I was hit with an awful sour smell, clearly something was wrong. The turkey didn’t look spoiled, but the smell was undeniable. Obviously, no picture could show what I was smelling, and keeping a foul-smelling turkey in my home just to take bring it into the store the next business day would’ve been ridiculous, so I threw it away.
I attempted to call the store at 11:51 PM, since Google listed their closing time as 12 AM, only to find out they actually close at 10 PM. So I waited until the next day. Once I finished work, my mother took the receipt to Safeway and spoke with the supervisor, hoping to get the refund handled quickly and respectfully.
Instead, she was met with a rude supervisor and another equally dismissive employee. Both refused to offer a refund simply because she didn’t have the turkey or a picture of it. Again, how is someone supposed to provide proof of a smell? The turkey was spoiled, end of story. Expecting customers to keep rotten meat in their home or take photos of something whose issue cannot be captured visually is unreasonable.
What made the situation worse was the attitude. There was no empathy, no attempt to understand, and no effort to offer any type of customer-service-oriented solution. For a $44 purchase, the lack of professionalism and basic courtesy was shocking. Is the holidays, family is visiting Safeway couldn’t care less. Now all amazing is a turkey hence the picture.
Yes, I could have dug through my trash to take a picture, but what would that even prove? The smell (the actual problem) isn’t something you can show in a photo. At the end of the day, this experience made one thing clear: selling bad food and then denying a refund is unacceptable.
I’ve been a Safeway customer for years, but after this? Never again. I’ll be taking my business down the street to Giant, where customer service actually means something.
Signed,
A very disappointed ex-customer
