  Tavira is absolutely a hidden gem in the Bethesda community! I discovered this restaurant in the spring of 2024 and have since brought different friends here four times. I particularly adore the codfish balls and the cadeilada, and the red wine poached pears are also splendid. The fact that this restaurant is as old as I am speaks volumes about its well-deserved reputation. It's a shame that its somewhat remote location for DC and its age mean it's a little quiet, but I'll definitely be maintaining a warm relationship with this restaurant for a long time to come.

  We have been going to Tavira for our wedding anniversary for many years. It was always “our place” where the food was great and the service old world. Last night we decided we need a new place. The restaurant was empty but for some reason we were seated next to the only other table that had diners. We waited 20 minutes for appetizers, a green salad filled with raw onions and a platter of rubbery clams. My husband had a very small serving of veal, which was advertised as a shank but had no bone. I had the bacalhao, which is a Portuguese specialty. It was not good. I am sad that this restaurant, which has hosted so many special nights for us, has declined.
