I’m a long-time Wakefield resident and chose to shop at Shaw’s instead of the busier competitors. After checking out, I noticed I was overcharged for potatoes—the sale price was $2.99, but I was charged $4.99. I wasn’t angry because I knew what I had to do, mistakes happen.
I went to customer service, showed the representative the photo of the sale sign.
While she was reviewing it, another customer service employee joined her. When I politely mentioned that, under state law, items under $10 that are overcharged should be given for free, I was met with an unexpectedly abhorrent response: “You don’t need to tell me what the law is. I know what the law is.” Her tone was completely unprovoked. When I asked the second representative if she heard the exchange, she denied hearing it,which felt dismissive and complicit.
I became upset and reiterated that there was no reason for that kind of attitude. (She must of forgotten that I was the one inconvenienced—having already completed my purchase, noticed the error, and even gone back to the produce section to take a photo to make the correction easier for staff).
I asked to speak with a manager, and only after repeating my request several times was he contacted. I explained the situation to him, including the unprofessional behavior and the other assistant’s denial. I suggested he review the cameras, as they would show the interaction.
Shameful that two middle-aged women, couldn’t take accountability for their behavior: even worse, they gaslight you making it look like you’re the problem. -BTW I’m middle-aged too.
This is the third time I’ve experienced pricing discrepancies at this store, and it’s extremely disappointing. Several years ago, an investigative TV report uncovered that another major supermarket chain was overcharging customers without their knowledge—a situation that ultimately prompted the law designed to protect consumers from exactly this kind of issue. Shaw’s can and should do better.

Shaw’s Supermarket - Wakefield
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆
Shaw’s in Peabody is a great quick shop—kind of like if Stop & Shop made a Temu version (and I mean that in the best way). The selections are solid, prices are fair, and it’s easy to get in and out without feeling overwhelmed.
The parking entrance feels like a mini race track, so buckle up when you’re pulling in. Inside, the store is clean and organized, but the staff could definitely smile more—a little warmth goes a long way.
As a picky Neww Yorkahh, I was pleasantly surprised. It’s not fancy, but it’s practical, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.
⚡ Bonus points: Go shop and charge! Shaw’s is part of the modern grocery game, and having EV chargers available makes it even more convenient.
Final Verdict: 4 stars.
Worth a stop if you’re in the area—quick, efficient, and stocked with what you need.
