We walked in and were greeted promptly by a very pleasant hostess. We were seated at a table in the back of the restaurant even though there was plenty of room in the front dining room.
We waited about 7 minutes for our server to show up, once he showed he asked for our drink order, then left our table. After about 10 minutes he returned with my iced tea and my friends beer. Again we waited 8-10 more minutes before be came back to take our order. My friend ordered a gumbo and just as I was about to order, our waiter was gone. I never got to order my choice of appetizer. Again we waited, our waited finally came back with my friends gumbo, no crackers, no bread. He put the gumbo on the table and was gone again. The restaurant had maybe 10 tables total, so it was empty!
The gumbo was warm, not hot at all, we looked for the waiter to tell him and ask for bread and crackers but he was no where around. When he started to eat there were shrimp shells in almost every bite, he was frustrated and stopped halfway through. We told the waiter about the gumbo being warm, full of shells and no bread, he apologized but did not offer any solution. My friend was ready to order another beer but again, no waiter. When he finally came back we placed our order and asked for another beer. Again, we waited and waited until the we finally got the second beer. Again waited and the food came. He ordered the fish special, which was ok, but the potato was a measly half of a potato and was dry as a bone. The string beans were so peppery and salty we could not eat it! I ordered the fish and shrimp plate. The Cole slaw was old, mushy and had so much pepper I could not eat it. I had 4 shrimp and 3 small pieces of fish and a mound of French fries. Very sad. The service was horrible, the food was the same. I am so disappointed in Don’s on Veterans. Do better guys, this is supposed to be Nee Orleans food, what a shame.
Also, two tables were seated after we were, they had a different waiter. Their waiter was right on spot, serving them, checking on them, talking and interacting with them. Our server made us feel as though we bothered him.
So said, we were celebrating my friends birthday, I picked Don’s, what a mistake ! And by the way, we were charged for the gumbo, even though it was not edible!
