I never regret a tip except when I come to this place. Their food is mediocre but so expensive. For the price, I expect their food to be upscale and delicious. I ordered to go and they immediately reminded me of the 20% tip on Togo for bagging it. They forgot my drink, when I asked for it, she apologized. We get to levee and there’s no napkins or plastic utensils. I was quickly reminded why I never go to this restaurant

Great place in old Gretna. Clean. Fresh food. Meticulously prepared with high grade ingredients. But nickle/dime on basics. Extra Chips and tortillas. $32.00 for mixed grill, 2-tortillas.
We had a very disappointing experience during our recent visit. The wait for our food was unusually long, and to make matters worse, two tables that were seated after us received their meals before we did. This was frustrating and made it feel like our table had been overlooked.
Service was also lacking. Our waitress never offered to refill our drinks. While delays can happen, basic attentiveness goes a long way and was clearly missing.
What stood out most was the lack of management involvement. The manager was present, yet never came by to check on us or acknowledge the delay, let alone offer an apology. Overall, the experience felt disorganized and inattentive, and unfortunately, it did not meet expectations. This place is too expensive for these types of experiences. Go to the other Mexican restaurants in town.

This location of El Gato Negro sadly on average just isn't quite as good as the others with the biggest issue being service often seems to be especially lacking. The building the restaurant is located in is nice enough and they seem to have created a pleasant ambiance. I've unfortunately also found the food here to be less good than at their other spots. It does often get VERY crowded in here so that can be at least one excuse for some of the poor service. However, I have been here when it was pretty dead and still experienced poor service so it seems to be a common pattern at this spot for whatever reason that you go for long periods of time without a server. Overall this is still a decent spot to grab some more high end Mexican food that tends to be more pricy than other Mexican joints. Overall if I'm paying the higher prices for the fancier food I expect better service to go along with it.
