Andi was amazing. Truly one of those waitresses who makes the whole experience better from the second she walks up to the table. She was funny, kind, attentive, and just had that sparkle. The food was incredible too. Every single thing we had was delicious, and the whole restaurant had such a great vibe. Honestly one of those meals where everything hit. We will definitely be back.

I came here expecting dinner and accidentally had a full emotional experience.
First of all, Andi was an absolute angel in human form. She was funny, sweet, on top of everything, and somehow managed to make us feel like the most important table in the restaurant without being over-the-top. You know when a waitress is so good you start thinking, “Is she the owner? A magician? A gifted woodland hostess?” That was Andi.
Now the food. Ridiculous. Offensive, honestly, because why was everything so good? Every bite felt personal. Like the kitchen looked into my soul and said, “Don’t worry baby, we got you.” I would like to formally apologize to my plate for what I did to it, because I left nothing.
The restaurant itself was amazing too. Great atmosphere, great service, great food, and the kind of place that makes you start planning your next visit before you’ve even paid the bill.
10/10. Would absolutely come back. Would trust Andi with my meal, my mood, and possibly my taxes.
It was okay.
The good: the food was good and they gave my husband a free dessert for his birthday. Ambiance was nice
The not so good: my husband wasn’t offered anchovies for his Caesar. He hadn’t been to J.Gilbert’s in a while and the last time he was there it came with them. When he asked the waitress after he’d eaten his salad, she said it was available upon request. But it would have been nice if it had been offered. Also we heard the waiter for the table next to us telling the table about the specials. This was after we ordered. Our waitress did not tell us the specials. Would have wanted to know them.
This is more than a five-star review, it's a thank you for the little things that make a special occasion special. When making the reservation for last Saturday night, I noted it was our 51st anniversary and, if possible, we would like a quiet booth so we could enjoy each others' company (code for we're older and don't hear as well as we once did).
When we arrived, the hostess smiled and wished us a Happy Anniversary. It was beyond just going through the motions, there was a warmth in the greeting like you would get when visiting an old friend you haven't seen in a while. When we were seated at a quiet booth, there was a card on the table and our server brought complimentary glasses of Champaign.
We eat out often, but we had not been to J Gilbert's since returning to Kansas City. It was always a nice place, but everything about it was better than we remembered. The food was excellent and our server (Rich) was friendly and conversational without being the least bit intrusive. Dare I say, perfect service.
Thank you all for the special touches - it was a great evening!!
We moved to Overland Park two years ago and had driven by J. Gilbert's several times as we were getting to know the area. We had read some nice reviews so decided to try it for my husband's birthday. I made reservation and they seated us shortly after we arrived. The atmosphere in the restaurant was the best we have experience in KC. Nice music playing and no screaming kids seated near us. Our waiter told us that this was his first night after his training. He was very nice and took our orders with no problem. I ordered salmon and my husband ordered ribs. It was almost 45 minutes before our food arrived. I had selected whipped potatoes and broccolini as my sides. I love salmon and have tasted a lot of great entrees while I lived in the Pacific NW. I found my salmon here, a little under cooked. The side of broccolini was very small and over cooked. I asked where my whipped potatoes were and he said he would go back for them. It was the same thing with my husbands sides, only one coming out with his entree. When the potatoes were served, they were just a lump on a small white dish, pretty unappetizing. My husband is originally from Texas and loves ribs. He said they were ok but not worth the $. He didn't really like the sauce. Then as were were finishing up, a couple came in and were seated opposite of us. The man was wearing a Carhart jacket that wasn't very clean and a ball cap. I didn't expect to see that in a nice restaurant! His date could have passed for a street walker. They proceeded to ask for long explanations about everything on the menu, speaking rather loudly. We were ready to leave by then but it took a while to get the check. As we were leaving we passed another table with 6 men. Four of them were dressed nicely with suit jackets. One of their group was sitting there with a baseball cap on backwards. I don't know if dress codes are a thing of the past, but when we lived in Houston, TX and went out to restaurants in this price range, you were turned away for wearing a ball cap and some of them required him to wear a shirt with a collar or a suit jacket. We had gone to the Kingdom bar & grill for lunch that same day. We had better service and a tastier meal for a lot less money. I am fine with ball caps in a place like that which is a sports bar! But I'd like to see some level of dress code at a restaurant in J. Gilbert's price range.
