Touted as one of Kansas City’s most highly anticipated restaurants of 2021, famed-pitmaster Mitch Benjamin brings his smoke and magic as well as his award-winning sauces and rubs to Meat Mitch Barbecue. From classic, competition-style winning recipes to boundary-pushing ’que, join the author of BBQ Revolution for a real barbecue revolution, right here in Leawood, Kansas. WHOMP!
If you take your BBQ even halfway seriously, you owe it to yourself to spend some time at Meat Mitch BBQ.
I’ll say it straight up as someone who pays way too much attention to smoke rings, bark, and fat render—this is the most complete, no-weak-links BBQ experience I’ve had anywhere in Kansas City.
The brisket hits that perfect balance where it actually tastes like beef first, smoke second, and effort throughout. Ribs have that clean bite—not falling apart, not fighting you either. Turkey (which a lot of places treat like an afterthought) is shockingly good—juicy, flavorful, and worth ordering every time. And the burnt ends? Best I’ve found in KC, and I don’t say that lightly. They’re consistent, rich without being greasy, and actually taste like they were handled by someone who cares, not just chopped up for hype.
Sides aren’t filler here. They hold their own, which matters more than people admit. And the drink setup? Legit. Solid beer lineup plus a real selection of hard alcohol, which already puts it a step above the usual BBQ joint expectations.
What surprised me just as much as the food is the feel of the place. The ambiance leans more polished than your typical smokehouse—clean, modern, a little upscale—but it doesn’t lose that BBQ soul. It’s the kind of spot you can bring anyone to, from die-hard pit nerds to people who just want a great meal.
Service has always been dialed in too. Friendly, efficient, and consistent—no off days, which is rare.
You can tell Mitch Benjamin takes this seriously. Not in a flashy, look-at-me way, but in the details. The kind of care that shows up bite after bite.
There’s a lot of great BBQ in Kansas City. But if you’re asking for the best all-around experience—the place where nothing feels like a compromise—this is it.

We celebrated my birthday here and I'm glad we did. It was happy hour when we arrived so I had the smokey chicken nachos. Delicious! The serving was small, but perfect for my entree.

Me and my bf came here on a Sunday afternoon around 12:30ish, and we asked if we could sit on the patio because it was super nice outside. We had a female waitress (pretty sure her name was McKayla) and she started out super attentive but then I asked for a sweet tea before we had ordered our food, and our appetizers and entrees came out before the sweet tea was brought to the table. She put in the wrong order and I didn’t receive everything I had ordered but she was nowhere to be found until the end of our visit when it was time for her to get paid. I understand it is hard to balance patio and inside tables, but this was some of the worst service and sub-par food I’ve had in a while, and the restaraunt was no where near full enough for the service we received. Not to mention they sat us right in the sun and right beside kids screaming racially inappropriate things (meanwhile me and my boyfriend are POC) , with their parents no where to be found. I try to be as empathetic as I can be with servers/restaurants but this was a horrible experience and I wouldn’t recommend this place.

Visited the location at the airport. The server cinnamon was excellent. The music was perfect for someone of my age (classic rock). Atmosphere was very good considering the location. My only complaint is the amount of food for the high price. 2 brisket sandwiches that had 2 strips of meat, and a handful of fries for $62 including tip. I use your spices almost everyday, but I didn't see the value as a good deal.

After being away from Kansas City for 6 months. I knew I had to a BBQ place to put me over the moon. I was referred here by a dear friend but had not gotten the chance.
The smoked chicken wings brought tears to my eyes. Garlic-Parm & Dry, both were fantastic (I would really recommend the Dry if you want to sample all the delicious compettive level sauces).
Our server, Hutch; was so nice & patiently explained things on the menu to us. He truthfuly made an already fantastic experience, BETTER!
I am excited for my return trip & shaming myself for waiting so long to go. It is no wonder why Meat Mitch is toted as Competition level BBQ.
