Average food for the long wait and very poor service. Nobody told us they were only accepting takeaway orders until after we had paid, and we weren’t allowed to sit and eat what we bought ( even where there were people still eating) . Walking and eating in the Icelandic rain and wind wasn’t exactly ideal. Had we known, we wouldn’t have ordered. Definitely look for something else.
Very popular restaurant in the centre of downtown Reykjavik. There is a huge selection of pastries (both sweet and savoury), as well as desserts such as cakes or chocolate praline. You can also sit in the restaurant for breakfast or lunch, though because of its huge popularity, be prepared to queue for a seat!
We had breakfast here. We ordered the sashuka and lamb tinga sandwich. The sashuka was on the sour side, but was delicious nevertheless. Could help with a bit more bread. The lamb tinga sandwich was fantastic. There is a faint lamb smell, but it was seasoned well. The portion size of the lamb was generous too! The bread was very well toasted and crunchy too.
The coffee was very nice too. Great roast with nice fragrance.
The pastries were less spectacular. We had better cinnamon rolls elsewhere in Reykjavik. The savoury ham and cheese croissant was much more satisfying.
Overall, great restaurant and bakery, with a nice ambience. There are just too many things on offer to try, so we were very spoilt for choice. It is also linked to the Sand hotel which I believe are owned by the same company.

I'm quite disappointed about this experience. I had the perfect trip to Iceland and this was my only negative experience that I had during my trip. I gave 2 stars since the food was good but service was terrible. I'm a black woman visiting and I chose this place to come eat breakfast since it opens early and I was planning to be on the road all day. I came in right as the place opened and there were a few others waiting as well. I see the people before me get sat immediately and given water. I wait for a table and the middle eastern looking man looks at me several times without acknowledgement. Place wasn't busy at all since it had just opened. He finally acknowledges me after waiting for a few mins then gives me a table but no water provided. He gives the people he sat down after me water and everyone before me got water. They also didn't have to wait, they got sat immediately when they came. Next red flag was the people who sat down after us got their order taken and got food before us. I had to ask the waitress for water. It felt racist and I see other low reviews mention this as well. If you're a POC I'd skip this place. I had a delicious and friendly breakfast at Cafe Babalu, Kaffihus Vesturbaejar and Yndisauki.

As I am noting on all my reviews, I had travelled back in November of 2023, and I am trying to be better about leaving reviews for businesses that provided an exceptional experience and deserve future patron business nudged their way. Thus, my review is almost 2 years late, but I want to give this establishment what they deserve. I stopped here on the 28th, as I love pastries and sweets and this was the other, highly-rated shop in all of Iceland. While what else I purchased escapes me, I do recall getting the cinnamon roll and once again, being extremely impressed. As I noted with my other pastry shop review, if you find this place on social media or via reviews, do yourself a favor and stop here and support local businesses.
