On January 26, 2026, at approximately 8:44 PM, I contacted the Jewel-Osco location at 1400 21st Street, Zion, IL 60099 to confirm availability of a carpet shampooer for a 24-hour rental. A store associate confirmed that two units were available, took my name, and assured me I could come in.
Given that it was 6 degrees outside, road conditions were poor, and I was dealing with red wine stains on cream-colored carpet, I drove approximately 36 minutes to this location based on that confirmation.
Upon arrival, I went directly to customer service. The associate there explained he was unfamiliar with the rental process and went to locate someone who could assist. He returned with an individual who I later learned was the Assistant Store Manager. This individual approached me shaking his head and immediately stated that they were not renting out any shampooers at that time. He did not introduce himself, wore no name badge, and presented himself in an unprofessional manner.
I informed him that I had just called and confirmed availability prior to driving there. Rather than attempting to verify inventory, problem-solve, or offer alternatives, he simply dismissed me. Only after I firmly stated that I had traveled specifically for this rental and requested management assistance did anything move forward.
What was most concerning is that neither the Assistant Store Manager nor the team lead present seemed to know the basic protocol for equipment rentals. In any retail environment, especially in leadership roles, managers are expected to understand core store operations or, at minimum, know how to quickly locate the correct resources. Leadership is about resolving issues—not avoiding them.
As someone who understands store operations, I find this unacceptable. Managers are typically trained across departments specifically to prevent situations like this. Instead of taking ownership, the Assistant Store Manager stood by while frontline staff absorbed the pressure. It was only after I stated I would escalate the matter to corporate that assistance was finally provided.
I want to acknowledge Ana, the cashier who ultimately helped me complete the rental. Ana demonstrated professionalism, patience, and competence throughout the process. I later learned she has special needs, which makes it even more troubling that she showed more knowledge, initiative, and customer service than the Assistant Store Manager—who likely earns significantly more and receives leadership incentives.
Based on the way I was initially brushed off and dismissed despite having confirmed availability, I genuinely felt that I was not taken seriously, and I question whether my ethnicity played a role in how I was treated.
Incompetence in leadership damages employee morale, customer trust, and sales. Customers should not have to stand their ground just to receive basic service. Had I not remained firm, I would have been sent away after making a long drive in unsafe conditions for no reason.
This experience was deeply disappointing and unacceptable. Until accountability is taken seriously at this location, you will not receive my business.
By the way the store manager im speaking of his name is Eric Wesner
