The Boss Started Working at the Sterling, Illinois Wendy’s… Just in Time to Shut It Down
So. Here’s a fun one.
The Boss—my wife, my better half, my reason for pretending to behave—just accepted a job as the daytime manager at our local Wendy’s.
And not three minutes later—okay, maybe a few days, but close enough—we find out they’re closing the doors.
For good.
This Sunday, November 16, 2025.
You read that right. She took the job, clocked in, and now she’s basically in charge of powering down the building and folding the uniforms.
It’s like being named captain of a ship after it hit the iceberg, and corporate’s handing her a mop and saying, “Hey, while you’re here, could you clean up the flooding in the dining room?”
Welcome to Wendy’s, Marcy.
Now, if you’re from around here, you’re probably not shocked. This Wendy’s has been hanging on by a thread and a half-hearted Frosty for a while now.
It’s not exactly the place you go when you’re craving quality.
It’s the place you end up when everything else is closed, your standards have dipped below sea level, and you’ve lost the will to drive another block.
I’m not saying it’s bad… but they ran out of hamburgers and fries.
At Wendy’s.
Let that roll around your brain for a minute.
That’s like Pizza Hut running out of dough.
Like Subway running out of bread.
Like your doctor running out of blood pressure cuffs and saying, “Just guess.”
And before anybody blames “the economy,” let me point something out:
McDonald’s is directly across the street, and at any given moment, the line is so long it looks like they’re giving away free cars with every Happy Meal.
It’s not the economy.
It’s effort. It’s management. It’s ownership.
It’s people not giving a single crinkle fry whether the place runs or not.
The parking lot alone tells the story.
If you pull in too fast, you’ll either lose your alignment or find yourself trapped in a pothole deep enough to host a bass fishing tournament.
The building? Tired.
The crew? Let’s just say some of them show up smelling like “relaxation.”
And the vibe? Somewhere between “abandoned roller rink” and “hold music from the DMV.”
Now, I’ve talked to a lot of people over the years—managers, owners, employees—and here’s the thing:
It’s not about what you pay folks.
It’s about pride.
Work ethic. Showing up and giving a rip.
You can throw $20 an hour at someone, but if they’re just there to lean against the fry bin and scroll TikTok, it ain’t gonna matter.
No one’s asking for perfection.
Just maybe clean the counters. Don’t run out of buns. And try not to smell like Snoop Dogg’s gym bag.
So now The Boss is in there, holding the line until Sunday.
Wiping down what she can. Smiling at customers who haven’t seen a smile in months.
She’s not trying to save the place—she’s just making sure it doesn’t go out with mustard on the walls and grease on the ceiling.
And you know what? That matters.
So if you’re local and want one last square burger before the lights go out—go now.
By Sunday night, that place will be quieter than a Blockbuster in 2025.
And if it’s clean and the food’s hot and the drive-thru doesn’t feel like a hostage negotiation, you’ll know who to thank.
(Hint: the “Boss”.)

ordered my food on the app 1 day last week and 1 day this week. both at 3 pm. each time i go to pick up my food, they claim theres no chili. Only been open 4 or 5 hours and out of chili ? their mobile app should say out of stock if its not. They want to replace my chili with a potato when i ordered fries already to put into the chili . also, as im waiting, people are coming up to the counter both times ive been there saying the lobby pop machine says empty to the 5 or 6 things they tried to get out of it.

Employees and manager appear to be incompetent. Didn't have what I ordered hours and wanted to tell me what I was entitled to get as a replacement. No buddy you don't get to tell me what I can or cannot eat. Didn't know how to refund money because he wasn't taught. Just close the place down because there's always issues here.

The store is dirty and sticky, the workers were unprofessional and didn't know the menu, customers waiting upwards of 30 minutes for food, and there's a massive pothole in the parking lot.
