I had a great experience on Saturday, December 27, 2025. We came during a busy lunch rush hour but we were still served our food fast. As always, Portillo’s food is great and they are infamous for their amazing hot dogs and their cake shakes. I didn’t actually order any cake shake today but because they had so many leftover from ones people forget to collect, they had to start passing them out and I was so happy to be one of the few to get an extra shake! Great service! Would come back if in Naperville area again. (Written 1-3-26)

A Chicago institution for decades!
Try the Maxwell Street Polish. Don't forget the caramelized onions and mustard. Absolutely delicious!
And maybe consider a breath mint afterwards if you want to keep hanging around with your friends, family and/or co-workers.

It actually pains me to make such a review. My father used to buy hotdogs from Dick Portillo at his hotdog stand in Villa Park back in the day. Now, while I understand and respect that Mr. Portillo & Co sold his company for a massive profit and good for him because that’s the American dream and the capitalistic way! However, whomever the restaurant company is that purchased Portillo‘s has COMPLETELY destroyed its food taste and quality as well as service execution.
I have been a lifelong Portillos customer as has my best friend who grew up in Melrose Park and also frequented many of the Portillo restaurants. She was in town from Florida as she moved there several years ago. We were close by shopping in Naperville and stopped in for a Chicago style hotdog, A gravy bread, a small fry and two drinks. For one, her hotdog was OK. Just OK. standard.” Better than Florida” as she said. That’s not saying much really.
However, the most simplistic gravy bread I ordered was not even gravy bread. It was a hunk of bread that was maybe dipped in the gravy for a few seconds. I actually threw it away. The juice was tasteless and it was literally just wet bread on the very outside and not at all ANY juice on this inside. This wasn’t the first or second time since the new company purchased Portillo’s that I’ve had gross, inedible, not original Portillo’s like meal. Sadly, to say it is my last attempt and I won’t ever go again.
I will continue to support more local Italian beef/hot dog businesses that are owned by locals that have better quality, better taste, and just overall better food & service.
Also, when Portillo’s was owned by Dick Portillo, the drive-through was run like a well-oiled machine. Today, that was apparently obvious that that is no longer the case. We were third in line and were taken sixth because the other person that charged out to help the 2nd line — — and the one person that was in the takeout line to help had no idea what was going on. So the service is no longer what it was either. They no longer have any idea what is going on in the line of their drive-through lane, nor the way it used to be run.
So, I will say goodbye to Portillo’s, and what it once was. We have a big corporation that has ruined our once beloved local Chicago & Chicagoland establishment that we could for decades count on for a great, consistent meal.
(Your Italian beef is awful now by the way. And don’t think we can’t tell that you reheat those french fries that we used to love so much. They are grossly re-heated now Iike McDonalds)
Shame on whoever owns our old beloved chain now. Boooooooo! You suck. Thanks for ruining our favorite chain & we will never take our children to it so it will never be their favorite either.

This place doesn’t live up to it’s “hype” I hear a lot of people that say they love this place so I went and mind you I only ordered a SALAD right there inside. To get my order I had to wait even though I noticed people just walking or talking and not doing anything really.
I order my salad and went to the “ pick up order” side and waited about 10 minutes for a simple salad!
While I waited I see the employees just putting orders on the counter but not reading out the order numbers as the food is put out in front!!
They just keep talking and just walking around.
The place inside was empty and the drive through wasn't even that busy so it wasn’t because of that!
I can literally see my order there but no one was reading out the orders as they came out so I had to go up and ask this girl that was just standing there and doing nothing and FINALLY got my order and left! 😡
This place sucs!!

If I could leave no stars I would. Last night I was treated like a nuisance. I showed up a few minutes before closing along with another customer. After showing up all the employees stared at both of us awkwardly for a few moments. Eventually an employee came to the window to take my order. Once I finished he closed the window and proceeds to wave the car that is waiting behind me away. I thought that’s odd since we pulled up before closing we should have been taken care of. Anyway after waiting 5 minutes for my food I drove off expecting it to be up to Portillo’s standards to shortly realize the fries had sat on the counter for what is obvious quiet some time and a burger that was cold. I tried to call the location but of course they waited to serve me until after they closed. Today I decided to pull up and speak with management as I was rudely interrupted during explaining what I was upset about she cut me off asked if I tried to call I responded yes she then aggressively asked me if I had a receipt I responded no not on me and told me there was nothing she could do. I proceeded to show her the sloppily put together burger I had that was given to me with onion skin on it lol and she told me that means nothing I need paper receipts showing me you bought from my location last night. I proceeded to ask if I could prove my purchase with a transaction charge she told me no and started to agitatedly tap the counter and say I need a paper receipt all I can do is give you corporates number. The customer service industry is horrible, no fast food spots are worth even spitting at anymore. I understand you won’t get the best quality but paying for cold food that obviously should of been disposed of is dishonorable.
