Both Elmhurst locations allow dogs. These are not service dogs. Does that look like a service dog at Schiller? That dog has barely 6 teeth and a Jewel associate is right there & said nothing or never went to management to report it. When asked, she said they couldn’t say anything to customers. Same experience over the summer at Butterfiled when an adorable dark brown lab puppy walked up to me to sniff my leg. I was in the frozen food on one side, oblivious to the other side, when a couple with the lab was on the other side & the dog (with no SD identifications) crossed the wide aisle to sniff me. When I told couple to get the dog out, they Jerry Springer’d their response & behavior yelling and yapping at me it was a SD. No SD would be distracted. They’re trained to ignore distractions. I went to staff and was told they can’t say anything to any customer because they don’t know a SD from a pet. Had that pup nipped my leg, Jewel would be liable! Why make your customers be the bad guy? Also, watch sale-by dates at Schiller. Have a few pictures with time stamps. Had conversation with store mgr. regarding yogurt & cottage cheese being expired, weeks past sale-by dates. No pictures tough. I’ve moved my shopping to Walmart, I am saving $, but it’s parking hassle and takes more time (get Walmart app & price compare).I still visit Jewel for some things, but can’t support them anymore. Edit - Just wanted to add that staff was nice & professional & apologetic but they have to follow the rules. Also, after this post, I Googled reporting health code violations for dogs in grocery store & my search returned a channel 7 report from 5 years ago where someone called channel 7 to report a Jewel in the city allowing dogs. They reported that it is widely known Jewel is dog (NOT SD) friendly!

My visit to the Jewel-Osco in Elmhurst was one of the worst shopping experiences I’ve had at any grocery store. I walked in simply expecting to pick up a few items, but what I encountered instead was shocking and deeply upsetting. The manager on duty, a woman named Maria, approached me with an attitude that was completely unprofessional and unnecessarily hostile. Her tone, her comments, and the way she interacted with me made me feel singled out and disrespected. Based on how she spoke and behaved, I genuinely felt targeted, and I left the store feeling hurt, uncomfortable, and stunned. When I attempted to ask a simple question, she responded with dismissiveness and negativity. Instead of offering assistance or even basic courtesy, she escalated the situation with comments and behavior that came across as discriminatory. No customer should ever feel looked down on, belittled, or treated as if they don’t belong—yet that is exactly how I felt in that moment. A store manager should set the example for professionalism and respect, but what I experienced was the complete opposite. I left the Elmhurst location feeling shaken and extremely disappointed. I will be reporting this incident to corporate, because no one should have to experience that level of disrespect from any employee, especially a manager. I will not be returning to this Jewel-Osco.

As we prepared for the holiday season, we stopped in at our local Jewel-Osco — a location we’ve been shopping at consistently for the past month or two. Unfortunately, every experience we’ve had there has been nothing short of horrible. From the lack of customer service to the unprofessional management, this store has repeatedly shown us just how poorly it operates. But this most recent visit was something extreme. There is a particular manager there named Maria (last name unknown), and her behavior was vicious, alarming, and completely unacceptable. She has been consistently rude, dismissive, and dishonest during multiple interactions, but this time her actions crossed a line. We visited the store to purchase some meats for the upcoming holidays. When we got home, we noticed one of the packages had a strange smell. Wanting to do the right thing, we returned to the store to request a simple refund or exchange. Instead of addressing the issue professionally, Maria accused us of not purchasing the item at that location — which was absolutely untrue. She refused to look into the matter and denied us a refund without any explanation other than her accusation. But what happened next was even more disturbing. As we tried to explain the situation, she made comments that felt targeted at our Jewish heritage. She told us, “We don’t serve that here. We don’t have any kosher products. Go find somewhere else to shop.” Her tone, her expression, and her dismissive attitude made it clear that this wasn’t just a misunderstanding — it was discrimination. Her behavior was racist, unprofessional, and deeply hurtful. We left the store feeling shocked, embarrassed, and unsafe. No customer should ever experience that — especially from someone in a management position who represents the store. We will never shop at this Jewel-Osco location again, and we will be reporting Maria to Jewel corporate immediately. What happened was not only disrespectful — it was discriminatory and disturbing. No one should be treated this way.
