Neighbors reccomended this place and I kind of figured it was just a tourist stop, but I went around 2 pm on Monday anyway. Line moved way faster than I expected, my Chicago dog came out hot with that snap and the fries were piled in the bag like people say. Spent about 15 bucks and was back outside eating in no time, which honestly surprised me for River North. Sitting here 3 hours later still thinking about how good it was, and yeah, I'd go back next time I'm nearby.
When you visit Chicago, trying a Chicago style hot dog is a must, and Portillo’s is a great place to do it. The ordering process is super simple, you can use a kiosk or go to the register, and everything moves quickly and efficiently. Once you place your order, you just wait for your number to be called, and it is all very organized.
The space itself is big, easy to find, and has plenty of seating, so it works well even when it gets busy. The retro decor gives it that classic Chicago feel, which adds to the whole experience. Service is fast, and having multiple ordering areas makes everything even more convenient. Overall, a fun and easy spot to grab a true Chicago favorite.

If you’re in Chicago and don’t stop by Portillo’s & Barnelli’s Chicago, you’re missing out on a true institution—and it’s absolutely justified.
This place isn’t just famous for the sake of it—it delivers. From the moment you walk in, there’s this classic, energetic Chicago vibe that feels authentic and timeless. It’s fast-paced, a little chaotic in the best way, and full of people who clearly know exactly why they’re there.
The food lives up to the hype. The Italian beef is iconic—juicy, flavorful, and exactly what you want it to be. The Chicago-style hot dogs are done right, and everything feels consistent and satisfying. Even with the crowds, the operation runs like a machine.
What makes it special is that it doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. It leans into its identity and absolutely nails it. This is comfort food, Chicago-style, done at a level that earns its reputation.
An easy 5 stars. Classic, reliable, and 100% worth the stop—whether it’s your first time in the city or your fiftieth.

Watch out for the manager and cashier as they tried to padd a order with extras to get extra pocket money. I caught them adding extra fries and telling me that the amount was the taxes on the order. What got is that I order the two specials that included sand... Fries...drink. I decided tax was 11c on the dollar to get a estimate of total but the register was showing nearly five dollars more. It was their burger special of $9.99. I refused to pay and the manager says it's taxes. Not that amount. Cashier then says I order fries.... Why as the special contained them. Be weary as they slip in extra items hoping you won't notice. The two of them were in on it as the dirty looks countined till we left. Sad they hire anybody.
Visiting from Tennessee and this was a horrible first experience. My girls and I did not dine in but decided to order in the drive thru. Order was wrong, bag was leaking with grease & etc, cheese was wasted all over everything.
I mean I could go on and on. Dundren, I think was the name of the guy that rung up our order wrong. Light brown/Dark skin guy with dreads and an accent.
Emanuel was the one who helped us out and corrected the order. He was understanding, helpful, and showed good customer service. I probably would not try it again just based on this experience.
The food was ok, and I did read the reviews prior to going so I knew it could have been a hit or mis. Oh, and a mis it was! I had high hopes for Portillo's but who knows, it could have just been an off night.
We did pull up about 11pm so they probably was tired, been busy, and ready to go. You can't please everyone. However, in the restaurant business you have to aim to please your customers.
