I have visited this Binnys twice in the last few years on visits to friends and both times I walked away with something very nice. This year it was a Yoichi to share with friends for a celebration. Before that I took a chance on a Binny's cask strength selection Mortlach 10 aged in a first-fill oloroso sherry butt. This has been one of the weirdest, most adventurous whiskies I have ever tasted. I bought it as a gift for a person who hated it so much that they gave it back to me two years later. By that time, the whisky had settled and oxidized to great advantage and was absolutely delicious but incredibly challenging and close to the edge of disaster. It tasted like a different whisky on each dram, and, sometimes, it seemed, almost with each sip. On some sips, it burst with sherried sweetness. On others, it bit back with Mortlach savory and somewhat bitter flavors like oolong tea and leather. Imagine drinking overbrewed tea that has spilled on a leather chair in a library along with some ink and some raspberry or cherry jam spread on buttery raisin bread. Or something like that. This was worth every penny but it wasn't for everyone. Kudos and cheers to Binny's!
