The Ames location is disgustingly dirty. Especially after being closed for a few days, they could have spent those hours deep cleaning this location. The bathrooms are disgusting.

I've come in off and on for the last few months after seeing the reviews online to find out if any of what was said was true or not. Nothing online is true, yes you may wait for a while but this store gets overloaded with orders, they are the busiest locations in iowa, compared to waukee this store is very quick and waukee does maybe six orders an hour compared to the fifty to sixty orders outside of all the doordashes they do on top of their normal business, even with all that the staff is friendly and polite and the place is actually very clean, especially compared to other locations around the area the people I'm seeing on here disparaging this location are all people who just don't want to acknowledge their own petty behavior in the store, like ordering specific items and after getting exactly what they order going back up to the counter and saying they didn't get what they ordered just to cause problems for the store and get free food. Then the people who come through the drive thru posting negative reviews don't realize that this store is the busiest store in Iowa and even though they get their food in a pretty quick time I've never waited more than four minutes without a reasonable explanation from them. I apologize for the long review just had to share after seeing how unfairly this store is being treated.

They’ve literally been closed for the past three days. Haven’t put up a sign or anything. We ordered through the app today and it said it was open. Got there and sure enough it’s closed again. Haven’t gotten our money back either this is genuinely disappointing.

As far as franchise models go, Taco Bell generally has better quality control than most. This store is the exception. This is the only Taco Bell in Ames, and it is hands-down the worst Taco Bell I've ever seen or been to in my life. The service is slow, the store itself is always filthy, the quality of the food is pitiful, downright egregious (you'll be lucky to even get what you ordered), and the workers are unfriendly and miserable, which is odd seeing as they apparently just do whatever they want all day. There have been multiple occasions that I've gone into the store in-person and it's been completely dead but for some reason its taken up to five minutes for someone to step up to the register to take my order. There have also been multiple occasions that I've gone to the store within their advertised open hours only to find that the store has been closed early with absolutely no explanation whatsoever. Not even so much as a note taped to the door. This happened tonight, Saturday, December 27, 2025, around 10:30 PM, which prompted me to finally leave this review that has been long overdue. This particular Taco Bell store has been like this for YEARS. I'm not exaggerating. I can say with certainty these problems have been present since January 2019 when I first moved to Ames at the very latest. I've told myself I'll eventually catch them on a good day but it's clear to me that there no good days for this store and never will be. I'm in awe of the way they've managed to maintain this dismal state of affairs for so long. How the entire management team hasn't been replaced with people who will actually try to uphold higher standards yet is beyond me. I love Taco Bell and it's so frustrating that I'd have to drive all the way to Ankeny just for the chance to get a Baja Blast that isn't 90% soda water or just a cup of non-carbonated Baja Blast Freeze syrup, or a Beefy 5-layer that isn't 90% stale tortilla. If you like Taco Bell as much as I do and find yourself in Ames craving their food, either make the 45-minute drive down to Des Moines or go to Taco Johns on Lincoln Way. This store will just ruin Taco Bell for you.
