Cashiers Lynn and Mennie were helpful but everytime I go to the bakery the baker isn't. On this particular day I happen to hear a male customer ask for an item I too was looking for he asked and he received. After getting my other baked goods I wanted I approached the counter a few minutes later the baker asked if there was something I needed and I asked for the same item. She said there was none with no hesitation and proceeded to tell me it will be available later because she was the only one there. On a different day I asked for a warm French bread since I saw it sitting out and they advertised hot bread between 4pm and 6pm . She said they don't sell it that way because if they bag it warm it will condensate. Why advertise the hot french bread guarantee at all? And all she needed to do was bag 1 for me to purchase. I remember there was a time the bread would still be warm when I purchased it.
I have been a regular customer and never have had good service at the bakery in atleast a couple of years !

Way too overpriced in comparison to other big supermarkets, even on Kauai! Furthermore, added sugar not clearly shown on some product. In total not satisfying

Safeway has decided to neglect the common courtesy held by supermarkets since the dawn of capatalism of offering customers a convenient disposable way to carry their grocery's. This is not only rude but greedy and negatively impacts both staff and customers, especially at the self checkouts where there is usually only one staff member expected to provide every single customer with the necessary bags that the customer is expected to pay for on top of problem solving for all the checkouts. No one believes that woven plastic bags are any better for the environment because they're "reusable" and the paper bags previously offered were cheaper, more convienient and better for the environment. Corporate greed once again trumps customer experience.
Edit: I must retract the part of my previous statement about reusable bags, not because they don't suck, but because Safeway is not actually switching to them, they're just charging for paper bags. My concerns about how this effects the self checkout process remain.

Here was the experience that dragged it down for me. The Deli. I went to the Deli to get some chicken and ready made salad and stood there obviously wanting to order and multiple Deli employees walked past ignoring me before anyone came and helped me.
The food was good, but this disrespect really irked down my rating here.

Last day of a week in Kauai. Made two visits to the Safeway. First time was a few days ago to buy a zippered cooler bag we could use to carry groceries throughout the week. Didn’t see any up front (figured they’d be with the other grocery bags for sale) so I asked the man at the self checkout. He dismissively said, we’re out, go check at the ABC. Meanwhile my husband found one on one of the aisles. So, employee not familiar with the inventory and/or unwilling to help. Fast forward to today. We were planning a picnic lunch so we went to the deli around 9am. One of the deli employees directed us to the sandwich counter to place an order. There, we most politely asked for a boars head turkey club sandwich. Although there were three employees behind the counter, the woman at the sandwich counter told us they were too busy. No apology, no offer like, “it will take us a few minutes, if you don’t mind waiting” or anything. Just surliness and a dirty look that left us with a general feeling of being unwelcome. Nice. We will not be back. Sad, because the location and selections are decent. Hence the 2 stars rather than one.
