We waited fifteens minutes for water and ordering drinks, we then waited another 30 minutes to receive our drinks. My husband and I shared the two person Tuna Wellington. It was amazing! Our friends’ plates were underwhelming. We declined dessert and after dinner drinks, as the 3.75 hour dinner service was too long, and we were all more than ready to get out of our seats. It amazes me how Ulu can automatically surcharge gratuity, and echelon prices, yet get away with coffee shop style service.

Ulu Ocean Grill at the Four Seasons is absolutely outstanding. From the moment we arrived, the service was warm, attentive, and flawless. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of fresh island flavors, you can really taste the quality and care in every bite. The oceanfront setting is breathtaking, especially at sunset, creating the perfect atmosphere for an unforgettable dining experience. Truly one of the best restaurants in Hawaii and worth every moment.

Very nice setting on the seashore where you can watch and hear waves. We chose this restaurant after a special event we had at nearby kukio beach as we expected this would be a perfect match for this occasion. Unfortunately, we were really disapointed. The menu was partly delicious ( meats, starters) but fish were not well prepared which surprised us at this price cathegory. The main problem of this place has been a service. It was simply terrible. We travel a lot, but this would be a world winner of the worse service in many years. We were attended by many personnel, entirely chaotic and they were asking the same questions or had the same conversation. We had to urge for everything. Menu, drinks, water. Young ladies were nice but were not coordinated. The other staff was either extensively conversating with hotel guests or talking together in the group of 2-3 people. They shared their personal stories together and were not interested in the guests. One older guy with glasses was even hiding at some counter. It was like in some movie. We felt really neglected and not welcomed. We have been in several Four season in Europe and this experince really surprised us. Consider that we paid more than 600 usd for the food which you can get in better quality elsewhere on the island and really terrible or even ofensive service. Preparation of the food was also very long, something like 90 minutes.

Very disapointing. Service was really terible. We had to repeatedly ask for water, drinks, check etc. Food is very good, but definitly does not have value for the price. If you are looking for fine dining, go to Merimans in Waimea and you will pay half price there. Main problem of this restaurant is chaotic and disorganized staff. Young ladies were very nice, but they probably were not well organized. We travel a lot and the service in this restaurant was really slow and chaotic which was even disturbing and we did not feel well in the ULU restaurant. We visited many restaurants on the island, but service here was the worse by far.

We recently dined at Ulu at the Four Seasons on the Big Island to celebrate my partner’s birthday, and overall, the food was incredible. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor. The pork belly bao was rich and perfectly balanced, the tableside poke was a fun and delicious experience, and the fresh catch was cooked to perfection. The only miss was the crab noodles, which were unfortunately too salty for our taste.
Our server, Doug, was polite and soft-spoken. He started out attentive, but once a large party arrived after us, the service slipped — we weren’t checked on again for the rest of the meal, which was disappointing given the setting and price point (we spent $370 total).
One bright spot was the complimentary chocolate soufflé for my partner’s birthday. It was a lovely gesture, and another staff member (not our server) kindly brought it out and even sang happy birthday, which made the evening special despite the hiccup in service. Unfortunately, even though I made the reservation quite early and noted the birthday in special requests, our table did not have a good view.
In short: the food at Ulu is exceptional, the oceanfront setting is stunning, and it’s a great spot for a special occasion — I just wish the service had matched the quality of the cuisine.
