Quite an unsatisfactory lunch this time around - I used to come here when I was little and was fond of the staff. This time however I decided to walk in for lunch with a friend. The host was a kind man who showed us a table. The waitress however, who we caught smoking out the front in the public eye upon entry, took 20 minutes to take our drinks and starters order (it was quiet)
I could almost forgive the smoking if she wasn't so pushy and rude.
My friend wanted the gammon, and was demanded to have two eggs with it when he only wanted one. "You have to have 2" isn't what you say to customers when they order their food how they want it. He felt uncomfortable about how the waitress encroached on his appetite.
The starters were nice, maybe a little extra cheese on the nachos could've been an idea, but all around was pleasant. We received our mains efficiently and we both had chips, but the salt shaker was faulty and dispensed rock salt all over my chips. I put vinegar first so the salt sticks, but the rocks of salt made my chips inedible. We brought this to the waitress' attention, to which she confirmed "Yep, that's rock salt." And then walked away with the shaker. Didn't even bring us another working shaker or offer to do anything about the chips when I explained and she agreed that I couldn't eat them now. Don't really see how a broken shaker is my fault.
But who cares about chips. The burger I had was excellent; soft bun and juicy patty and cooked perfectly to how I requested. My choice of no burger sauce was listened to, and it was delicious. My friend enjoyed the gammon, received the sauce he asked for quickly, and commented that his chips were cooked well.
I revealed myself to be a Whitbread shareholder with a discount card and the waitress quickly changed her tune and began to joke with us and try to redeem herself. I noticed. It was a let down and almost spoiled the afternoon, had it not been for the polite and attentive host who brought our drinks quickly and was extremely welcoming. He made us feel important and that is what sticks out.
Suffice to say I will not be returning, possibly to the waitress' advantage, as I'm sure she was happy to see the back of us.
