I had a very disappointing experience at this Burger King, largely due to the way I was treated by the manager, Nakita.
My family rarely visits Burger King, so I downloaded the app to view the menu and noticed the “Kids Eat Free” promotion. I placed my order at the drive-thru speaker as normal. When I reached the payment window, I asked if they could scan the QR code for the promotion. The employee told me they couldn’t accept it at the window and that I would need to drive back around and place the order again.
I was confused because there were no other customers in the drive-thru at the time (apart from my partner behind me, who wasn’t ordering). I had my 3-year-old in the front seat and my 1-year-old in the back, so having to drive around again was inconvenient. I politely questioned why the code couldn’t simply be scanned at the window, but I was told it was company policy.
I drove back around as instructed. When I got to the speaker again, I said, “Hi, I have a code I’d like to use.” The manager responded, “Oh, it’s you.” She then began explaining the promotion. From what I understood, she was saying the offer only applied to one children’s meal, which I accepted without issue. She then explained I needed to purchase an adult meal, which I had already intended to do, as my order consisted of two adult meals and two children’s meals.
She continued explaining something that I genuinely didn’t understand, despite my repeatedly saying that whatever was required was fine. Rather than clarifying, her tone became increasingly abrupt. My partner, who was on the car’s hands-free system, even commented that she seemed rude. Shortly afterwards, the manager told me she would not be serving me.
I went into the restaurant to ask why I was being refused service, as I had followed every instruction given to me, including driving back around the drive-thru. I was again told it was company policy that QR codes couldn’t be processed at the window.
After leaving, I visited the Burger King in Willenhall instead. The employee there was friendly and helpful. I explained what had happened and asked about the QR code procedure. She told me they are able to process promotional codes at the window if a customer wasn’t aware they needed to mention it at the speaker. She explained it may require the order to be amended or re-entered, but that it wasn’t a problem.
This left me even more confused about why I was refused service at this branch. Customer service should involve explaining procedures politely, especially when a customer is simply trying to use a promotion correctly. Perhaps Nakita should start to ask when a customer is at the speaker whether or not they intend to use a promotional code to prevent this happening in the future.
Based on this experience, I won’t be returning to this restaurant. Lucky for you Nakita, you’ll have one less car in the drive-thru while you sit back. Whether it’s a power trip, a personal bias, or simply poor customer service, your attitude speaks for itself. Whatever the reason, professionalism and basic courtesy don’t seem to be your strengths. Whatever your problem may be, you may not be suited to a managerial role.
