We’re best known for our iconic bakes, fresh sandwiches, delicious hot drinks and sweet treats. Over eighty years ago, John Gregg started out with one goal: to deliver (by pushbike) fresh eggs and yeast to the families of Newcastle. Ten years later, he chained up his bike and opened Greggs of Gosforth.
Since then, we’ve opened more and more shops and have become something of a Nation’s sweetheart. Our menu has also changed with the nation’s taste. Long-standing Greggs fans among us may even remember the olden days before the hotly debated Vegan Roll, or our refreshing iced drinks.

I bought a heated cheese and chicken sandwich, which was handed to me as ready to eat, only to find that the chicken inside was still completely frozen. When I pointed this out to the member of staff, instead of apologising or simply sorting the issue out, he was incredibly rude and had a go at me for being the only customer who had said anything about it. Apparently, because nobody else had complained, I shouldn’t have either. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect food that has been heated and served to actually be heated properly — especially when it contains chicken. What was even more disappointing was the attitude of the staff when I raised a genuine issue. The frozen chicken was unacceptable, but the way I was spoken to afterwards was even worse. Really poor customer service and not the experience I’d expect from Greggs. If you can't get it right then close down.

I ordered a pepperoni pizza and the employee told me they didn’t have any ready, but if I waited 10 minutes they would make one. While waiting at the Morrisons petrol station location, I saw the worker putting pepperoni on the pizza and then leaving to stack boxes in the petrol station area. After coming back, he did not wash his hands — he simply rubbed one hand against the other and continued handling the food. What made it even worse was that the same person appeared to be working both in the petrol station and preparing food for Greggs at the same time, including going back to the cashier area. I was so uncomfortable with the lack of hygiene that I threw away the food I bought and have not returned since. Food hygiene should be taken seriously, and I hope this issue is addressed properly.

We’ve been donating unsold food for a long time. Originally our bakeries would team up with large charities who would help distribute it to smaller organisations.
This process remains in place, though we’ve also worked hard to increase the amount of unsold food donated by our shops and we currently support a network of 1,077 local good causes.
In 2022, we redistributed 1,800 tonnes of unsold food through our Outlet shops. A share of the profits from the outlets, totalling £450,000, was then donated back into the communities we serve.
