I would like to publicly ask the Hartburn Co-op senior management team to urgently address the ongoing and worsening issue of shoplifting and antisocial behaviour around the store.
The level of theft from the shop has become completely unacceptable, with certain individuals regularly helping themselves to goods in full view of staff and customers, seemingly with no regard for consequences. Several members of the public — myself included — have felt compelled to intervene and stop shoplifters from walking out with stolen goods. This should not be happening and should certainly not be the responsibility of customers.
We now understand that staff have been instructed not to challenge shoplifters, which is understandable given the very real risk of confrontation and violence. Staff should not be placed in unsafe situations, but equally, the current approach is clearly not working.
The existing CCTV measures and oversized security/GPS cases on higher-value items such as steaks are evidently failing as an effective deterrent, especially when these discarded security cases are regularly found dumped around the surrounding area.
This ongoing problem is having a clear negative impact on the local community. The store is increasingly being seen as an easy target, attracting undesirable behaviour into the area and affecting residents, customers and staff alike.
Surely there is more that can be done. Has sufficient support been sought from the police and the council’s antisocial behaviour (ASB) team? A joined-up response is clearly needed.
The Co-op has a responsibility not only to protect its staff and stock, but also to be a responsible neighbour and help tackle an issue that is visibly affecting the wider Hartburn community.

I had a very disappointing experience in this store due to an employee named John. He was aggressive, rude, and unprofessional not only toward customers but also toward fellow staff members. Witnessing the way he spoke to colleagues was uncomfortable and created a negative atmosphere in the store. Professionalism and respect should be shown to both customers and employees, and unfortunately that was not reflected during my visit. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and addresses the issue

It almost always has a Great selection of produce on offer. My only complaint is that the car park is quite small and shares it with neighbouring businesses, meaning it can be a bit cramped at times. But this isn't the fault of co-op. Aside from that, it's a brilliant little shop to pop into. The stuff are all very friendly and happy to help.
